I am having trouble sifting through the SBG store to find a Katana with a 14" Tsuka. I Noticed the Oniyuri by Cheness and it seems fine, luke warm reviews. I am trying to find something that has a standard blade length. The Oniyuri may be just a hair short for me. Id like to keep the price point under $400 I think I remember seeing something under Ronin brand as well, but I cannot find it again.
At any rate, if anyone has any recommendations or opinions on something they like, I'd love to hear. Thanks for your time everyone.

This seems close to what you want: LinkJKOO/Sinosword also takes custom orders (I have purchased several custom swords from them), and they do an admirable job for the price. Don't be intimidated by the limits of their custom order form ( Link). Once you begin email communication with a sales representative you can work out whatever atypical design parameters you might have for you custom weapon. My recommendation is to use clear language (as free of idioms as possible), and provide precise measurements in both imperial and metric format (if you have specific measurements in mind).

Is this the Ronin you were thinking of? kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=RHS3&name=Hanzo+Steel+%2D+Black+Out+Ninja+Assassin+SwordIts tsuka is listed at 13 7/8" with differentially hardened blade length of 25 3/8". On sale for the next week or until their stock runs out, whichever comes first.

No, not really my style. Thanks for looking though. I seem to remember it had a blue saya and was part of a "dojo" series of something of that nature. My memory could very be faulty...

I currently have a Musashi XL cutter from CAS. Purchased about a decade ago. I'm very pleased with how it has held up. Are you able to comment on the quality of that company vs the JKOO custom swords you recommended? If you want more specs on the Musashi one I'll have to find my paperwork. (:

Hi Webster. I'm not sure of the exact measurements, but the Hanwei Golden Oriole, Musashi, Lion Dog, and certain models of their Raptor line have to be close to your desired 14" tsuka. You have a Musashi, so there's that. The Lion Dog seems close at about 13.5" Its above your desired price point, though. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2439&name=Hanwei+Lion+Dog+Katanawww.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2416&name=Hanwei+Raptor+Nanbokucho+Katanawww.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2415&name=Hanwei+Raptor+Unokubi+Zukuri+Katanawww.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=PC1018&name=Hanwei+Golden+Oriole+KatanaI have the Oriole, Lion Dog, and the Unokubi Raptor. I like them all, though the Lion Dog's size is the most notable (in a somewhat negative way). The Raptor is fine, while the Oriole excels. No negative there in the weight, balance, or speed department. The blade is much thinner/smaller in profile, though, so I'm not sure it could take as much heavy cutting as either the Raptor or Lion Dog, though (or your Musashi).

I would get the Hanwei Pro Elite and keep it moving. It's a known high quality sword. I presented you with the links. I took my time to help you out. The Hanwei is going to likely be better then the JKOO in my own experience. I appreciate that you gave me the links and took your time to offer me your opinions based on your experiences. The idea of a custom piece was interesting to me as I had never considered it, so I was asking more about it.

(: My experience with Hanwei has apparently not been as good as some others here have had. I consider the majority of Hanwei's sword products to be quite mediocre, with their quality control being rather lax until we get into products in the $1000 USD range (but even in their higher end product lines we see a significant number of QC issues). I've had a few minor issues with Sinosword/JKOO as well, but they have all been minor ones (a bit of superficial rust, and a warped saya). I would consider the product quality of JKOO to be about the same as the comparably priced Hanwei swords. The biggest difference, and the most important one for me, is the option to have one's sword custom made (something Hanwei doesn't offer). I have made multiple purchases from JKOO, and all of them have been custom swords with specific details unavailable from anyone else I've been able to find at that price point. I've been using JKOO customs to prototype various concepts I've had, before potentially spending a mint having one of the high-end smiths make them for me. To that end, they've worked out great, and I'm not disrespecting JKOO by saying this. One of my custom blades from them turned out amazingly, and after I finished furnishing it, that sword has become one of my favorites. I think that for a few hundred dollars (US), you can get a custom sword from JKOO which is pretty close to whatever you might be picturing in your imagination. Buying from Hanwei, you will have to adjust your expectations to fit the details of a product they already make. At the same price point both companies make a somewhat flawed product, but one of these companies will work with you to make the sword you want, and the other one won't.

Right. For the price point I currently need there is going to be a little hit and miss either way. Aesthetically it would be nice to have something that isn't your standard black saya, black sageo, black tsuke. Etc. Might be fun to mix it up. Thank you for the reply.

Why a 14 inch tsuka? The only Ryu-ha I know of that uses extremely long tsuka's is James Williams of Bugei Trading's made up Nami Ryu...
