just for fun.. If you had to face off against an opponent in the following scenarios and had the ability to chose your weapons prior to battle. what would u choose? For armor, you only get leather.
Weapons/shields you get to choose from: short sword, longsword, hand and half sword, rapier, 1 handed axe, 2 handed sword, mace, flail, spear, buckler, wooden shield.
Opponent 1: leather armor, shield and spear ( i would choose to fight him with a shield and longsword)
Opponent 2: platemail, longsword and shield (I would choose a flail and mace)
Opponent 3: chainmail, 2 handed sword (I would choose buckler and rapier)
Opponent 4: leather armor, dual 1 handed axes (I would choose buckler and spear)
Opponent 5: chainmail, shield and flail (I would choose hand and half sword)

Hmmpf, always 2 rapiers. Keeping them on distance, thrusting against armor/gaps. Long pointy quillons.

Not that easy to break a rapier. Especially when held in an arm that has a lot of give. You bat one away, and there is another waiting for an opening Combine that with evading, and you got a decent set up

Yeah, that's my thought. In real life I'd probably drop one by mishap and go on like this:

Limited as we are to the meager options listed, I choose a wooden shield (because leather armor isn't much protection), and a spear (because outreaching your opponents is a huge advantage). I don't think I would change my weapon choice for any of the listed opponents.

Spear and ax for me for all scenarios. A spear because distance is good and it can be used for leverage and lots of other things. A knife on the end of a long stick is never a bad idea.
And the ax for bashing into armor. The sharp side for flesh, the other side for things you can't cut. I would rather have a poleax, but it wasn't listed.

For armor, you only get leather. Real-life "leather" armour (which would usually be rawhide, buff coats excepted), or fantasy/movie leather armour? Helmets? Visored? (Rawhide helmets were a thing, but usually open-faced.) Body armour and visored helmets will take some of the fun out of using a spear :( Leg armour? Two-handed swords have a lot of potential as foot amputators. If "spear" can be picked from the almost-infinite number out there, a two-handed winged spear of suitable length will outreach everything used by those opponents, and give opportunities for trapping, hooking shields, and cutting. So that and a short sword (ideally, a dagger, but that's not on the list, and short sword is closest). Dagger is a very effective anti-armour weapon (in combination with grappling).

The classic anti plate combo is a broomstick and a dagger. With my long arms and a rapier I have a reach over 2 m / 6' 5" - without lunging. Better than many spears gripped with two hands. Interesting weapon variants: A bastard sword, a two handed sword light enough to be used with one hand. A warhammer (could count as a mace), the classic medieval can opener. Dual rapier and warhammer? Dunno, but I like the idea!

Opponent 4, and of course a rapier! If the shortsword is small enough I'll take that as my left hand. Otherwise a buckler.

One opponent? Only leather for me in any of those scenarios? …Ok, then… An 8' halberd in any case, preferably the heavier his armor, the heavier my head, lol.
...Oh, halberd isn’t listed. Well, then spear and hope for a stout one or two-handed sword. Normally I would go with a shield and a one-handed sword, but since his armor is superior and his reach longer in most cases, I’d go with a long and heavy hitter.

ok, well thanks everyone for the interesting feedback.. im surprised about the answers, but most of you, know more about this then i do! here is why choose my answers!
Opponent 1: leather armor, shield and spear ( i would choose to fight him with a shield and longsword) I choose a longsword because i figured I could easily break his spear with my longsword and the guy would have no choice but to run or give up!
Opponent 2: platemail, longsword and shield (I would choose a flail and mace) the flail i could easily defeat his arm holding the shield... and then the mace because i could hit him ANYWHWERE.. as opposed to finding the tiny gaps with a spear or rapier.. and the opponent KNOWS of his own small vulnerabilities in his armor and not likely going to expose them to you!
Opponent 3: chainmail, 2 handed sword (I would choose buckler and rapier) Buckler to fend off the 2-handed, and rapier to defeat the chainmail
Opponent 4: leather armor, dual 1 handed axes (I would choose buckler and spear) Spear because it would be harder for him to break my spear with his axes if he had a sword... plus you have some great range!
Opponent 5: chainmail, shield and flail (I would choose hand and half sword) no shield for me because of the flail..and hand and half would give me good range and still good power to defeat and beat down his shield. When he's left only with his flail.. all to easy to take him down!

Opponent 1: Actually, breaking the shaft of a spear with a sword is quite difficult! Because the spear is held in the hand, there's nothing for it to brace against when struck with another weapon; thus the spear would simply be batted aside, not cut or broken. A shaft of wood the size of a spear shaft would even be difficult to cut if it was braced against something. There's a reason why spears were a primary weapon throughout all of history up until the invention of firearms; they wouldn't have been so popular if they were easy to break. Opponent 2: You've chose the right weapon for the job here for sure. Maces and warhammers were specifically used to combat full plate. Opponent 3: Unfortunately, a buckler would simply be too small and light to effectively fend off a swing from a two handed sword; you'd risk getting your arm broken. A sharply pointed longsword, hand and a half, or even two handed sword (like an estoc) would probably be a better choice than a rapier for punching through mail. Such an action requires a stiff weapon with some weight behind it, and while rapiers aren't light, the blade would probably have too much flex to burst or bend the rings of the mail. A spear with a sharply pointed head would also work, or an axe or mace to inflict crushing wounds. Opponent 4: Good choice here! A spear against someone armed with two slower weapons and no shield is a good match up for you. A buckler should be able to fend off the strikes of a hand axe, too. Opponent 5: Flails are odd weapons, and there's actually not a lot of evidence for the typical spiky ball on a long chain type. Most flails that we see from the Medieval era are of the wooden agricultural kind, the type where one shorter shaft of wood (usually reinforced with metal langets and spikes) is attached to a longer handle by a metal ring or short chain. Like these:

So what weapon would you have to fight an opponent armed with something that you don't know they have, but you left the house that morning carrying....what? What did you have on you when you left the house? THEN use only that (because it's what you have) to fight a random opponent armed and armored randomly. My choice would be a spear and an axe or some derivative form thereof like a halberd or poleaxe. That way when I come across some random threat, I have options.
