So I’m bored and wanted to start a discussion about the changes to Norse Mythology in the newish God of War game. I actually really liked the changes to the mythology and thought they made logical sense. One example is Tyr being heavily implied to have been killed by Odin and Thor because he was too heroic. A major theory is that Tyr or Tiwaz was the chief god of the Germans but was eventually replaced by Odin and Thor as major figures of worship. Even in the original mythology Tyr is a heroic god while Odin and Thor are tricksters and violent brutes by modern standards. Another change being that Freja is Frigg in the game. Another major theory is that they were the same goddess in the myths but were mistakenly written as two separate goddesses based on misinterpretation of alternate names. In the game Frigg was a malicious nickname of Odin in order to belittle Freja’s accomplishments and assign them to a fictional character.
What are some of your thoughts on the lore of the game?

Haven't played the game, but this and what I've seen on YouTube have made me pretty interested. Do you need to play the previous God of War games in order for this one to make sense?

The game is written in such a way that series veterans will have plenty of continuity nods but newbies like I was will have fun piecing the links to the past together. Kratos keeps his past a secret from his son so new people will see the game largely from his son's perspective but veterans will see it from Kratos's. The important parts of the past are answered as the game progresses though. Honestly the old games were kinda dumb and immature but the new one is very well written.

I kinda got the feeling that this one was different from the previous games. I'll definitely give it a play.
