hi, anyone know of a target you can make that you can swing at freely without damaging your sword and without destroying the target in the process? thanks!

I use both blunts and sharps on a stack of discarded car tires slipped over a freestanding wooden post. Mostly blunts. Sometimes sharp machetes. Rubber tires will withstand sharps just fine.
However, a sharp sword used on said tire pell will gradually become dull. It shouldn't chip or break, so it's probably the safest pell for sharps. But it will not stay slicing sharp as desired. Use a blunt for pell work and a sharp for cutting cuttables.

And you can walk into any les schwab or local tire shop and ask nicely if you can take away some of their discarded tires from changes. I've done that a few times. Say they're for garden planters if you don't want to be a weirdo.

Old carpet rolls work great too, they fray and fuzz all over, but don't inherently cause damage.

I've used a 'Nerf' foam soccer ball with a hole through it, attached to a piece of rope and slung over a tree limb. You will eventually hack it into little pieces, but hey...it's just a Nerf ball.

Anticipate when the ball is almost returned back...then turn and block. If you have someone to hold the rope and pull the ball up and down, even better.

One point...I've NEVER paid for carpet...I just watch the curb on trash days and ask the home owner if I can take it... Now are some of them gross, you bet! But you're gonna hack them to bits and toss them so...the price is right.
Nerf ball... I used to hang tennis balls all over my basement and do drills aiming at different heights and balls. Its all about control. Power is different.

I used ratty shoestrings and poked holes in the balls. So really anything can work. Use a dull sword, and realize it will really hone your thrust accuracy...not so much swing accuracy.
Another thought. Make a Pell and wrap ratty carpet around it. I just bought a 10.00 peeler core and buried about 3 feet of it. Carpet wrap and you're good to go.

I've learned to make a point of having only sharps and blunts. Semi-sharps or dulled sharps are just asking for trouble. They can still seriously hurt you. So with that said, sharps get used on cutting targets only. Bottles, tatami, fruit, cabbage, etc. I have a cedar stand for this which doesn't damage the blades on a miss. For steel blunts you can use a sword pell. There are many different designs for these, but they are essentially punching bags for swords. But the idea is to practice good form, not simply to smack with all your might.
