Time to contribute something to the community.
Let me start by saying a couple of things:
- This is a "pre review" because this sword might get replaced (learn why below);
- I paid full price with my own money for this sword, intending to satisfy my curiosity about this brand;
So, to start things off, I gotta say that I have been looking for a blade to work on so the sub 150€ I paid for this sword meant I didn't expect perfection... And I didn't get it.
I'll put up some pics and links later. So let me begin in earnest...
I got this from a shop called Loja Rei das Espadas. Paid 145€, sent to my door step.
Took a bit longer to arrive than expected (was backordered I think) and it arrived in a serviceable cardboard box wrapped in tape.
First impressions:
The blade was wrapped in clear film, soaked in oil, with a protective plastic tip cap.
The blade is impressive. Really wide and the whole sword, despite not being very long, feels massive. Weight is massive too...
Some rust dots here and there. The inscription is well made. Maybe half a millimeter deep...?
As soon as I picked it up I noticed it was a bit too heavy, but since its my first Euro sword (BTW, if I had to guess its a really wide type XVIIIc) I thought it was me being wimpy.
As I sighted down the blade I could tell ripples and hammer marks, but most disappointing, a bend along the flat and and inconsistency in the centering of the edge and also of the ridge of the blade.
Despite this, I feel the overall sword is successful and the temper seems okay at least. I could not make take a set (or correct the bend anyways...)
The pommel is massive. Its like a mace on its own.
The handle is plain but well shaped, and it stains your hands but whatever, it feels good. The leather and its stitching is probably too simple but it just works (for now at least).
I am in talks with the vendor to see if a replacement can be obtained (and if it is even worth it). Regardless, the blade will be taken apart for heavy modding, so I'll update the review when I figure out if its peened or not (seems so, but I really can't be sure).
Oh, handling!
Nope..... .. .
Waaay too heavy!
Technical info:
Blade:
- length - 88.2cm
- thickness - (guard/mid/near tip) 5.59/5.66/5.23 (mm)
- percussion point - 57.5cm
Balance point: 14cm from guard
Cross guard: 1 x 2.5 x 22.1 cm (tapers to 7.26mm at the tips)
Handle:
- length - 26cm
- pommel length - 9.49cm
- pommel diameter - 6.28cm
Weight: 2.5kg (yeah...)
Final(ish) opinion:
I really like the idea of this sword. Its far too heavy for actual use. Shame about the warps and hammer marks. The polish is nice. Just at that sub mirror level that looks nice but can be used.
Let's see how things go from here...
I will update this soon. With pics!
