I'm boycotting IX, and pretty much anything Disney. Someone I know got Disney +, and asked if I wanted to watch with them, so I did. Glad I did not pay to, and my boycott is definitely still intact. It was an interesting enough episode for me to want to see the next one. But again, no way would I pay for it.
Poor Salacious Crumb! His humor more than makes up for any tastiness he might have!
The action was not well done, imo. Let it speak for itself, pan that camera out wide, and let us see what's actually going on. Too many jump-cuts trying to create the idea of franticness and energy. It shouldn't be an idea, it should be more than factual by what we actually see happening. Hate choppy directing and editing like that!
They tried way too hard on both the Wild West angle and the he's a total badass angle. It got annoying. We get it, that's what they're going for, but they don't have to beat us over the head with it. Lay off the effort, and save some of it for future episodes. Being so heavy-handed with it on just the first episode was annoying.
So...the character right next to the Mando at the very end...dead or just incapacitated? Interesting contents to the little container there.
Again, I'm glad I didn't pay to get Disney +, and I will happily be going to Jumanji instead of IX this December. None of it is worth the price tag. This show is interesting. Not terrible, but not blowing me away, either. I'll watch next week on someone else's subscription, but no $ for Star Wars or Disney from me.

So apart from special effects and action- do they bother to tell a story? That's been my complaint about any Disney Star Wars product- it's all about color and action and effects, but there's no coherent story they are trying to tell. Without that, it's actually quite boring to watch.

Like the western touch, and the rough feeling. We will how it goes...

The Western atmosphere and "badassery" were just a little too thick for me. Look at the original Star Wars and Mos Eisley cantina...it had an implied Wild West mood to it, but didn't beat you over the head with it. Trying way too hard with the Mando, imo. What did you think of the end?

Well i didnt recognize the little one as Yoda species firs, so i "didnt get it" really; but Holger immediately went "WTF, cool!" immediately... and he almost freaked over that Werner Herzog guy! I didnt know that one either... but i remembered him then from "Jak Reacher". Holger said he is a famous german movie director... OK, i wonder why i never heard from him? Whatever.

Herzog was also in The Exorcist. Maybe it was the music drowning everything else out, or maybe I'm just not used to his accent, but I had trouble understanding what he was saying to Mando in this episode.
I was trying not to spoil anything for anyone, but I guess I should just be more specific and ask, do you think IG-11 is dead, or just incapacitated? If he's not dead, the Mando just turned an ally in to an enemy, I'd say.
The little Yoda is cute. I wonder if he'll be an actual character, or just kind of there?

So apart from the "wow" factor and the special effects, is there a "why" to the whole thing? Is there a story being told? What are the motivations of the characters, and what is the theme of the show? Is there any underlying content?
I've got a bad feeling about this.

I kinda like the open ended nature of the show so far, ep 2 was great if not alittle short

Bueller?
Is there a story being told or not? What is the motivation of the character that frames the story? What values is he fighting for/against and what is opposing him? What is the struggle in which the character will be formed and changed as the story progresses?

What is the struggle in which the character will be formed and changed as the story progresses? Probably won't get to see the second episode for a couple of days yet, so I can't quite reply fully to those questions. But, yes, I'd say there is a story arc going on. Or, will be. Motivation so far seems to only have been collecting bounties. However, we got a very quick glimpse of his youth. Combine that with how the first episode ends, and I'd say we have a bounty hunter, whose soft spot just might have been pricked, and might now use his skill set for more higher and purer motives. Opposition are his bounties themselves, rival bounty hunters, and perhaps clients who he might not feel he can work for any longer. The remnants of the Empire are still there, too. I'd say the Mando's change in character might have already come early in the very first episode. The struggle itself might be difficult to see, because he hasn't taken off his helmet yet.

i like not knowing where the story is gonna go, it has a really nice old western type of feel to it and for a character who hasnt taken his helmet off in 2 episodes i can still feel alot of emotions in the scenes the mandalorian is in

So that is what happened, but no idea why? I am reminded of the old TV series "Kung Fu". In the first episode we learn that Cain is bi-racial Chinese and an orphan. He was taken in and trained in Shao-Lin despite the racial prejudice against doing so. He then, out of passion, kills the murderer of his teacher and escapes to America where he seeks his half brother who is his only remaining relative. Along his journey through the Old West, he encounters injustice, racism, and compassion in equal measures. As he journeys, he uses his training to help others out of difficult situations and also to help them grow as people, all the while being hunted down by the Emperor's bounty hunters for the crime of murder. He is as much affected by this as others, and his growth comes from his openness to other ideas and his own questioning of the meaning of "justice".
That was the first episode. And there were cool things like fights and stuff, but we still got a coherent character with clear motivations.

What I know about the character from two episodes:
-He's an orphan raised to be a mandalorian bounty hunter -He's part of a tribe that he contributes to, not a loner like boba fett -He's young and still proving himself, he doesn't have full armor yet. -He's cold enough to send a relatively harmless target like the blue guy to his doom
His development begins when he sees baby yoda and wants to keep him safe instead of letting the droid kill him and just taking the money.
It's a story, it's just a smaller story. It's about a competent warrior that keeps getting thrown off by new challenges like potato horses, jawas, and cute baby aliens, and has to adapt. It's Star Wars Samurai Jack.
I have spoken.

Thanks for the insight, redmichael. But if that's all that can be extracted from what the story is about, then it's a story about nothing and I'll take a hard pass on "The Mandalorian" and spend my time elsewhere.

That's fair, it wouldn't be for everyone. I just wouldn't want you to think it's like the force awakens or the last jedi, because I liked it much better than those.

It looks interesting but not enough to pay for Disney+. I'll stick w/ Netflix for now. I still have about 300 things on my "watch list" to get through. Somehow, I don't think I'll ever run out of stuff to watch.

I just finished episode 3, and I'm enjoying it a lot. The action could be choreographed better, but I say that about everything that isn't John Wick or The Raid.
What I like is the surprising humour and humanity it shows through out, and I enjoy the western / ronin take.
I was expecting less, so every episode is a pleasant surprise
