That's awesome, good on him.
That axe will probably be in a police evidence room for at least a year while the local prosecutor's office doesn't get around to making a decision.
And this is a good example of why Dog Brothers-style grappling training is so important even with sharps. The axeman was using a real weapon and had ample sparring experience, but the first hit wasn't a show stopper and the fighters got bound up. I would expect anything but a solid headshot to end a fight. Also gotta wonder if a short spear wouldn't have been more effective choice.

Which is why an extensive collection of weapons is a necessity...

Unfortunately he didn't hit him hard enough... Agreed. But most people don’t have it in them to hurt or kill someone even if they’re being attacked. I’d like to think if that was me the only thing the police are going to have to track down is where his head rolled off to. But until put in that situation, I guess I won’t know for sure.

I’ve been in a situation like this a couple of times....one of which I’ve recounted here....the things I learned was that it’s going to come at you when you LEAST expect it, there will be no time to think everything will be instinct, and when it’s over you’ll remember everything like it was slow motion...lol.

The last thing in the world I want to live with is someone's death on my conscience - no matter how justified. However, if it's a question of you or them, and your life is in real danger, quick incapacitation is the surest way to make certain you walk away from the incident alive. Unfortunately, the swiftest method of incapacitation is using lethal force. I'm glad everything turned out okay. If I'm ever in the same situation, I hope this is how it goes down: no deaths, and me (and any people I'm protecting) unscathed.

I think we can agree a harder, more dedicated( bad intentions) strike with that axe would have had a different result. Or, my guess here, the only axe blow that had any space to speed up hit a raised arm or a moving torso covered with a jacket and probably several other thin layers of cloth. And it still left a wound that dripped enough blood for the police to follow. Probably would have been fatal on the neck or head. Might have been fatal anyways without medical intervention, which you have to remember can be quite impressive nowadays. So expecting better results than that from yourself or anyone else seems a little idealistic. From the video interview, the guy looks like he can probably throw a whomp. And now he's one of the few who has.

Agree with most of the above. These type of things usually happen so quick that there is no time for thought just reaction. And I also don’t want to kill someone because of the possible karmic repercussions. But if it happened I would accept that as opposed to the alternative, my death or death of other innocents, as I think most of us would. My remark about the police having to track where the head went was a bit of macabre bravado in my part and a little gallows humor.

I find that most of the time bladed weapons are used for defense, its kind of a desperate attempt to keep them away and discourage the attacker from continuing what they are doing. Killing someone can weigh heavy on the mind. Plus it makes a blade collection feel morbid to the owner, once he sees what they do to actual people
Some people are messed up enough to like it or just able to justify it well enough, but not everyone is that way

Anyone from the old days remember Jason Ryan from Arms of Valor? He recalled to me once a tale when a friend of his was forced to use a Katana in a life or death self defense situation..
The home invader was killed in the process, but the amount of blood, gore and the sheer horror of it made him sell his entire collection and he never wants to see a sword again in his life. Ever.
Much better to use non-lethal force and if lethal force is required and you have one, a gun is a much more sensible option than a sword any day..

I had to put away my entire collecting for a while after it. It took me a while to shake off the feeling of how morbid it felt afterward. My cure was to decide I would use literally anything else in a self defense situation. It's why I have been personally advocating anything else that I can

Axe him no questions, and he will tell you no lies.
Jokes apart, I'm glad he didn't come to any harm.
