In response to the recent uplift in scammer activity on the forum we have amended the rules. From today's date on sellers will need to provide photos of the item for sale/trade in the sale thread, and in at least one of the images you need to have a note displaying your username and the current date. Users who do not provide these will be contacted, and refusal to add them will result on the sale thread being removed.
Also, I would very strongly recommend that PayPal users insist on using the Goods and Services feature. It'll cost one or the other some extra money, but the protection is worth it. Remember that the forum cannot intercede in private sales between members, so there's nothing we can do if someone gets ripped off. It's entirely in the shoulders of the members involved in the sale.
Here are links to the Marketplace and Classifieds rules, as well as a thread listing things to look out for and keep in mind when using these features of the forum.

Awesome move! Too many grifters/conmen (and women) online - great way to protect members.

Do we need to update any current for sale threads or does this only apply to new threads?

Yep, just from today on. Posting images of the item in the sales thread has been a rule for a long time, but since we so seldomly had scammers it was not enforced particularly rigorously. Providing proof of ownership and possession has also been a rule, but before it was at the buyer's discretion to ask for it. Basically the only real change is that sellers will now need to prove they actually have the item in their possession using the above mentioned method at the time of posting rather than at buyers' request and that the existing rule will be more strictly enforced.
If I had my druthers I'd also make using PayPal G&S a requirement, but that's not within my ability. Still, really, really strongly recommend that you use a method of payment that has some form of buyer protection. I want this to be as safe and secure an environment for members as possible.

And just to note, if you want to be extra awesome, and you have a current posting, add a pic with your user name etc... I'm surprised we didn't think of this earlier. But there I go thinking

I have asked people for that in the past, if they were people I didn't know. Picture/time stamp etc etc. And Paypal G&S. Glad for the rule
