So, I'm 33 years old, iv been into blades since I was about 8. I started collecting Benchmade and Spyderco, then as I grew up, I traded all the knives I had for microtechs, automatic knives. I THEN sold every one of those, including a few other pieces to buy my first Rick Hinderer Spanto folder XM-24. (Almost has a katana shape to the folder blade, it's very beautiful. So anyway from about 2012-2014, I was making alot of money, and I ended up having an $11,000, 8 knife collection. Most of these have fully hand ground blades in satin and assorted finishes. (unfortunately the company expanded major, started production runs on blades that were only available every few years in a blade show lottery, and now I'll be lucky if I can pull 3-5 grand selling my 7-8 knives!!!)
So now I'm in this position, my fiance has a brain tumor in her left frontal lobe, I haven't been able to work in 2 years, I am caretaking for her and our 12 year old son w severe ADHD. So my only chance is to sell off the knife collection, make a good couple grand, and try my HARDEST to find what I want. Unfortunately once I get into something, my taste skyrockets past my means, but hey, when I want something, I REALLY make it happen! Good thing I can't afford any luxury or sports cars! Another crap thing is as I was managing three niche retail locations for just under a decade, I had to stop working because my fiance was having constant seizures a few years ago, and the PTSD from that has made me not even want to leave those are unbearable, even though she's doing great right now. We killed the cancer, but the tumor gave her epilepsy. ANYWAY..
SORRY FOR RANTING! The reason why I want a true Nihonto that is razor sharp is that, I suppose I can't settle for second best. I am buying a katana for everything that it entails. Since a young boy I have been obsessed with the Japanese culture, every facet of it. A true Nihonto represents, for me, my favorite traits of the Japanese culture. Honor, discipline, respect, take your time, the fact that a true Nihonto by a true swordsmith in Japan is truly a ceremonial thing. And also, I just want one single end all be all sword! (I say that now, 🙄) I want something that if the world ever ends, we can't get rounds for our firearms, I want something, even with little skill, capable of handling any situation that may threaten the life of myself or my loved ones, a weapon that for thousands and thousands of years, was un surpassed. The finest edge weapon that man has ever created. And they don't run out of bullets. I want a sword that would last a lifetime, something I can cherish my entire life, even though I probably won't use it except on A paper test. And if all semprini hits the fan, as a deterrent or last case scenario as a brutal weapon towards someone trying to hurt me or my loved ones.
I've been obsessed with the Japanese Samurai sword pretty much since I knew what a sword was. Even at a child's age I could recognize the form and function, the strength and tip for piercing, slightly curved blade for slicing.
So I had this crazy idea to trade my knife collection of Rick Hinderer Custom hand ground blades (pre 14') ...for the nicest, strongest, most traditional katana I can afford. I'm thinking 4-5 grand.
So IS IT POSSIBLE to get everything that I hope for with 4 to 5 thousand? I can't deal with a sword that was produced in China, even if made by a Japanese Smith, or someone who taught an experienced Chinese Smith, I just can't do that. That is not authentic, I need a katana that was worked on in the same fashion they were thousands of years ago, but I'm not interested in vintage unless I can find one with the most immaculate blade, which I already know based on my limited knowledge will be way out of my price range.
How do I proceed? Do I sell my knives on the knife forums? eBay looks like a wash. Do you think there's a sale section on this forum, I'm sorry I haven't browsed it enough I figured I would make my first post here! on the knife forums there is a want to buy section want to sell, want to trade stuff like that.
I mean I don't doubt that there's someone out there in the exact opposite position of me, they started with a katana, and are now into Rick Hinderer blades, who knows?
Thanks for reading my book guys, and get used to it! I'll be on here a lot now, forums are my absolute favorite part about hobbies. I have moderated a few in the past, so I will never be any trouble for anyone here.
And again I graciously appreciate all comments advice and whatnot. I really hope to hear back from somebody guys especially people that have been in this situation, and have some decent ideas. Add to plan on one day learning w an iedo sword, but my first katana has to be absolutely gnarly. I REALLY want to stick with Tamahgane steel. That's why I'm prepared to pay $1,000s... You know once I saw my neck collection of course!
I joined this forum mostly to learn, but to also see if there are guys out there getting rid of things that may be right up my alley?
Thanks so much!
