I have nickel plated samurai sword. It was my uncle's sword and after his death, for 22 years, sword had no maintenance.
Restoring this sword has symbolic meaning for me. that's why , despite having zero experience with swords, i dont want to take it to swordmaster and want to personally restore and maintain it from time onward, as best as i can.
What i am interested right now is how to get rid of rust.it has black rust, I tried spray for rust cleaning but it didn't work. Then i tried sandpaper and it worked really good but i am afraid it will also take off nickel from sword.
So what should i do, what is best practice for such situations. I would appreciate any advice as i am beginner and don't really know where to start.
It's not high quality sword or anything, just something i wanna do.

I realize this is old but if you are still watching.
If its plated metal we can dispense with most formalities of repair methods.
Thing to consider:
Have you tried rubbing with aluminum foil and a little water. It's a surprisingly effective way to clean rust from chromed steel parts. I use it on car and bike parts regularly.
Now the problem is the rust will eventually come back through the compromised areas. You can use oil to keep it away, but consider talking to an electroplating company. It's not an expensive process and they should be able to help with removal of rust before replating (some of the solutions used commercially are not safe without experience). A new layer of plating should give you years of stability.
edit - replating advice assumes the sword has a uniform finish. Obviously this would cover up any surface treatments (like a brushed hamon on a Japanese style sword for e.g.)
