I have a theory the writer played Rune Quest... Just because those bows are a shoe in for the 'multi missile' spell.

It would have been awesome if the reviewer did some slo-mo sword play.

I was approached earlier this year about making a replica of Hawk's mind sword, but the things the fellow wanted for the sword were not things I was comfortable doing. Needs a smaller pommel too. Voltan's sword isn't too terrible, could certainly be redone with the same theme but altered details to make it more visually appealing. I was fond of the movie as a kid as pretty much anything along those lines got my attention, even if only briefly.
It's always interesting to see these sorts of props up close. Often they don't have the detail or form we imagine while seeing the movie because our minds fill in the blanks and imagine something more epic. That's one of main reasons I don't like to make accurate replicas of movie swords, I prefer to make them like I imagine it should have been rather than how it actually was. Seems more fitting for a fantasy sword.

So...this might explain some of the sword weirdness in the movie...though it predates what Todd was talking about.
And...brotherbanzai is spot on...we always add mental details to make it more epic...
