Yeh I would agree with you Brother Nathanial and its only through gaining experience and by reading other peoples experiences on forums like this that you learn what the gains and pitfalls are through other people with greater experiences. There are formites on here who have a great deal of knowledge .

Just as an afterthought regarding Khukuri House Handicraft Industry (KHHI) , on three of my khukuris I ordered from them , I asked them to hollow grind the blades for better balance and to reduce the weight . I have to say they did a first class job of this . Their Kamis (khukuri makers) are highly skilled at what they do using only very basic tools and the sad thing is because of the class system which still exists in Nepal , the Kamis belong to the lowest class not even being allowed to grace higher class houses in some cases !On a happier note KHHI does recognise and reward the skills of their Kamis more than most companies .

I was given a modern Khukri a few years ago as a gift. I'm fairly certain its the Ex Gurkha Khukuri House 11" blade service khukri. Kind of what I think of as the classic modern khukri. I really like the feel of it in the hand and the style. It did make me curious about antique versions, and I came across Atlanta Cutlery's antique khukri selection. According to the site, they are all pre 1890 and native to Nepal. I have no reason to doubt their claims, and I've picked up a total of five over a couple years. I bought the bare blades only, since they were only about $50 a pop. Overall I love them, but the condition is pretty random. One of them has a very weak (but probably period) pot metal repair. That one is for display. One is very worn but still serviceable (it seriously looks like it was the camp firewood ax, which is kind of cool). One is fairly worn but still nice, and two are pretty sweet. Two out of five in nice condition isn't the best if you are more looking for pieces in cherry condition. But in that case, antiques probably aren't your cup of tea. I dig the history in these things. Of those two, one has a 12" blade, making it a nice fighting knife or camp tool. I put on a leather-wrapped handle and it feels amazing in the hand. The other has a 14.5" blade and is really beefy. I'm putting a hardwood handle on it, and this one is so big it's a borderline short sword, kind of like a kopis.
I hesitate to recommend these antique khukris only because it's a little unpredictable what you will get. But if you are into khukris or want to dip your toes into the antique world without paying antique prices I'd say go for it. I'm glad I did.

Seems purchasing a decent kurkri depends on random luck of the draw. Certainly even the most expensive are subject to quality control issues ranging from very good to totally non existant. I have abstained because of this. Like the concept, hate the execution. I do live 5 blocks from ExGurkHouse

I do live 5 blocks from ExGurkHouse I have this one coming from KHHI but of course I won't know quite how good it is or if they followed all of my specs until it's here. Based on 1800's antique. Very excited to hear how this one turned out! The pictures of it are absolutely beautiful.

Gads, ever read the reviews on Amazon? All over the map on almost every kurkri product. From horrid to excellent. Mentioned I live near ex K. Called and said I'd be in in 7 minutes. They said "ok". Got there in 8, rang, knocked, and waited maybe 5 minutes, then got let in. Lady barely understood English. I had told them I wanted to select from at least 3 Brit Service and 3 Panawals over the phone. Guess. No response or recognition...nor acknowledgement I'd called not 12 minutes before. Nobody else came out after easy 10 minutes. Flashed my 140 cash and walked out. She kept showing me weird clothes.

I have ordered a few over the years - and i find that the ones with minor issues (at least in my collection) were the ones i gambled on lol. In terms of using these Antiques - I personally would not, but they can be: Brother Nathaniel - really loving your custom Khukuri!! Such a beaut I just placed an order of 6 khukuri from "Khukuri House Thamel" yesterday... Now the waiting game...

I might be alone on the love of heavy built kukri haha. I love how thick my Ex Ghurka Kukri House is. Would make a mean survival blade and a mean weapon. For its size, it can chop like an axe I agree with this guy, he seems smart, cool and awesome. Best person on earth
