Ooo! I bet that guard is heavy. Machine pressed. Dished out bars. There's a shiney bit on it. May be gilt steel instead of brass (?). Balance can get weird on some of these combos.

Found, tucked away on page 478 of l'Hostes ,,Armes Blanches'', image 992. The description says the M1896 basket with the thick borders was used by Cavalry of the Line troopers. Totally missed that one. So it seems that L'Hoste made up his mind after all.
That is one very nice sabre. Shagreen you almost never find on French grips. I wonder why that is so. That shiny bit Dave mentions may be remains of gild. If you have the time I would like a super macro shot of it. Hard gilding by then was already done in an electric plating bath, so the costs were quite low. By the looks of it the basket is made from brass with a lot of red copper in the mix. This mix one can see on many later hilts. That blocky grip too. Hard gilding saved the owner a lot of cleaning of basket and uniform and lasted for years if done right. I'd say this is a variation on the deep bowl Préval basket? I have no idea as how to classify the blade. The length says Cavalry and that sturdy looking basket too. Very interesting. A review would be very welcome.

No, no gilt steel or washed out chemicals here, just some solid brass alloy guard; the shiny bit is the reflection of the windows. Here's another look of the guard: Not a cheap made sword, the owner wanted something good, the handling is stupendous and so is the overall construction

Very, very nice indeed. This design could show up in any Star Wars movie if you get my drift. Perfect combination of antique and modern industrial design.

To put my thoughts in the most blunt, caveman way - I want it.
That's really gorgeous, especially with the shagreen which I have noticed seems to not show up on French sabres that much for some reason.
