The top one is new to me ($50 from China), and presumably more suitable for larger blades. Although you could retrofit a simple crossbar to a Lansky/Apex style system, as in the lower fake illustration. This would allow you to sharpen 10" at a time rather than 3" sections with a smaller angle at the extremities. The crossbar might be worth a try if you already have Lansky/Apex style system lying around.

This is the simple crossbar idea.

I like the crossbar idea, I may try that. Thanks for sharing. I don't have lansky stones yet, but I have used a friend's set on a 4" blade and that was the only time I have achieved a true razor edge.

And just out of interest, the poor man's Wicked Edge. It isn't really better than the handheld Lansky, but there it is.

Continuing the theme of DIY sharpening systems, a couple of variants on the crock stick theme where you hold the blade vertical, or the stone vertical. The variable angle vise was under $20 on Amazon. I have the cheapest Worksharp thing, I should have spent more money.

I stared at this for five minutes wondering how you thought the saber was a rapier until at last I saw his avatar.

Thanks Red, I was still wondering. As for me I am happy with my Work Sharp KO model especially when it comes to reprofiling. To each his own.

Correct! I have the matching main gauche too. The sword being sharpened is a Cold Steel "1830 Napoleon Saber" AN IX. Christus Imperat Rapier, I believe.

I have a Wicked Edge...and gave away my Landsky to my son. I think you can easily get their level of crazy precision if you have an angle gauge that is very very accurate. But bravo on finding less expensive options...using a WE to do swords is a PITA at best.
