There has been some tension around here lately, but hopefully this is something we can all get behind.
My daughter just texted me an alert, the head of Sony Entertainment tweeted that certain "very famous people' want to remake The Princess Bride.
UNACCEPTABLE!

Well, luckily for them some very famous people already made The Princess Bride, so they don't need to bother.

I'm not sure if there would be any reason to watch a remake when there is a perfectly amazing version that already exists 😎

I'm in the camp that remakes can be a good thing, if they actually add something new to the story.
So for now I'm cautiously optimistic for two reasons: Into the Spiderverse is an amazing Sony movie, and hopefully some of that magic might get channelled into a remake.
And the second reason; more people study rapier than when the movie came out. Surely the increased interest will affect the remake in some way

Reminds me of the news that there are plans to remake Big Trouble in Little China, too... and of how clinically dull and po-faced other recent remakes of classic movies like Total Recall and RoboCop have turned out...

that movie was ahead of its time, i would love a remake with updated graphics as long as they dont mess it up, hell i would like a sequel

A sequel would be better. It could explore a new story while still paying homagd to thd original. A bad sequel is also less offensive than a bad remake.

Just checking, y'all do realize The Princess Bride the movie is an adaptation of a book by that title - the very one featured in the framing narrative of the movie - and not an original work, right?

I can only really think of two remakes that I really liked. One was 'the day the earth stood still' and 'Mad Max, Thunder Road'. Was not expecting much from the second one but they took it to a whole new level.
Big Trouble in Little China cannot be remade. Its perfect as it is - and useless unless James Hong is in there. Huge James Hong fan, and yes, he was in the remake of the day the earth stood still too.

It's from a book. Like the Lord Of The Rings, which a certain Peter Jackson then did a remake of (by the way, I really liked the "original" Bakshi LOTR quite a lot, still do). So here's the thing: you don't have to like or even look at anything, that's getting re-done nor does a remake take anything away from its predecessor... great, isn't it?

Can't say I dug the Earth Stood Still remake as much...Keanu being Keanu being Keanu.

Right, it's not that remakes are inherently bad. For one fine example, compare the Vincent Price House of Wax to the original Mystery of the Wax Museum. I just think it'll take a small miracle for the film to turn out anything but a thoroughly cynical cash grab with a load of sloppy CGI and briefly topical references.
On the other hand, miracles like Fury Road do happen...

Expect the worse, so any surprises are pleasant ones. Though it is somewhat boring to live in a world with so few surprises.
OTOH, they could just reshoot the parts with Peter Falk and Fred Savage, and leave the rest intact.

This. The original movie is a classic, but a lot of great scenes from the book were left out of the movie, and Chris Sarandon's Humperdinck is about as far from his portrayal in the book as is physically possible. I would love to see Buttercup's parents, and childhood, and of course her brilliantly named horse. There is room for more than one great adaptation of one of my favorite novels.

I'll wait for the re-make and then watch the original for the first time. Big Trouble in Little China another I have never watched, in entirety anyway. Mad Max, Fury Road, a film I enjoyed more the second time around but still can't really equate it well to any of the older related films. A film that could be redone well, in a current context would be the 1959 film On The Beach. I am sure that some of the hot rods to hell plot line of Mad Max starts there but there was The Cars That Ate Paris in between. Cheers GC

How could it possibly be damaged? I doubt it's gettin altered, so... If I say "The Chipmunks", which springs to your mind first: the ancient comedy songs, the old cartoon, the other less old cartoon... or the stinking awful CGI/live action movies from yesteryear?

I really wish they'd remake bad movies. There'd be an actual point to it beyond just piggybacking on somebody else's brand recognition - you know, make it anew and make it right this time.
Like Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter! So much potential, such rich creamy cheese - so little budget, talent or time... Just imagine, say, Dwayne Johnson as El Santo teaming up with Kung-Fu Jesus (Marc Dacascos?) and gunslinging biker nun Mary Magnum (Zoë Bell?) to fight the vampire gang lead by Doctor Praetorius (Paul Giamatti)...
