sorry guys maybe i'll post less about the customs that I get to help steer the forum back in the budget range, speaking of sub $400 dollar swords tho I really want to get a kingston arms katzbalger when they come back in stock I don't think anyone should stop posting about the higher end ones, as a newbie those were the things that I loved to read (drool) about years ago. I'm working on a DSA review, and I should have a Tod Cutler Antenna dagger showing up in the mail in about an hour or so. Tod Cutler stuff looks awesome. I'd love for him to add a Maine Gouche one day.

I like this thread, constructive stuff. I am guilty as well... I'll look thru my pile and see if there's anything I can dredge up to review etc.

I was looking for something one handed, that was a bit pointy, and thought that within that price range that was the type XVI I would go with. So far, I'm really quite impressed.

I just got done unboxing it, and for the price I'm certainly happy I went with it over the A&A version, though I'm positive the refinement of the A&A would be obvious if held side by side. I think he just might, though it would likely be a very simple off-hand dagger compared to most.

This might be something he would do at a reasonable cost if asked, I would think.

All my favorite swords just have a strong profile and crisp execution. I don't need bling.

I like a little bit of bronze or brass in a hilt, or a few accenting lines filed into a steel guard. But if I guess correctly, you're far more of a rapier and onward type of sword collector, where I'm a 13th-14th century collector - so what is "bling" to me, is likely bottom barrel to you.

I was referencing the antenna dagger by Tod, to the Aunlaz(?) dagger by arms and armor. Sorry about the poor dialect!

Well I’ve just watched nddave’s Homildon Hil review (because I’ve always liked that sword) and I might make that my first Windlass. I know it’s meant to be out of stock but I don’t think anybody told the UK stockists !

Maybe the review did motive some buyers? You might want to call or email SouthernSwords and ask because they're selling one on Ebay right now. Theres also one availble from a seller in Poland if shipping isn't too much to the UK. Heres a link, www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m4084.l1313.TR10.TRC0.A0.H0.Xsword+of+ho.TRS0&_nkw=sword+of+homildon+hillThanks for watching though, working on episode 3 as we speak!

I've read but not commented on a lot of threads recently bemoaning the reduced activity on the forum and harkening back to a golden age where people eagerly sought out suprisingly good budget blades rather than jumping straight to premium and customs buys. Soooooo why don't we just go back to that? Drum up a little enthusiasm for what used to be a pillar of this community rather than just missing it. I'd like to challenge you all to buy, post about, review and otherwise create interest in any sub $400 sword/mace/axe that catches your interest by the new year. Having a limited budget makes this rather easy for me. I have a commission waiting with Driggers and a 300 dollar sword blade from China that I am building on my own into a new sword.
I agree with your assessment of the forum, although I don't believe I have been here long enough to have properly observed its decline in participation. To your point on forum members not participating because of a lack of emphasis on finding good budget blades versus luxury items, I would say the culprit here is elitism. I use the word elitism NOT as a pejorative term. So it is not my intention to insult anyone.
Having said that, elitism can take many forms. Sometimes it's economic: a clique of forum members can afford Albion swords and custom pieces and they seem to dominate the conversation; envy can certainly fuel the lack of participation. Similarly, there is also a sort of intellectual elitism: a clique of forum members have far more experience and knowledge, sometimes esoteric knowledge, than the rest of us and they seem to intervene in many discussions to correct or augment the narrative towards the truth. These know-it-all's don't usually interject to score points or to put anyone down, but sometimes it can feel overwhelming. One could argue that some of us just don't want to learn, or that some of us just want to instruct, but either way feeling out of one's depth can certainly be a factor. I think, for some of us, our appreciation for this stuff just isn't that deep.
Here is an amusing video that illustrates how forums can become too expert.
