I have several things I would like to unload, but I don't think anyone would pay a cent for them. So I am rather stuck with these things. They're all tucked away in a closet. Is there a charity that would pay for the shipping and just take them? LOL Hullo, you've reached the J. Williams charity house for wayward swords. Throw em up in the classifieds, never know what might sell. *Sad music playing* These poor, neglected blades need a loving home. For just the cost of shipping, you can make sure these swords get the love and care they deserve.

The camera cuts to a shot of a lonely, neglected sword stuffed in a corner used as a hat hanger. I would never use a sword as a hat hanger. How dare you. Although I did use a Scottish dirk to scratch my back last night.

Eets a good sord, bot it is not so sharp to shave. For this I haf to give it only 2 stars. Feints are bad. OMG, this is so apt. If he complains about rattling sounds, tight or loose scabbards, gaps in fittings and other such things with reproductions over 700 dollars, then that is totally fair. I support any complaints he has about those items, but the shaving sharp nonsense and other nitpicks, coupled with constant groaning with a Swedish accent, are getting on my nerves. Stop whining, Skall. I'm pretty sure it's a German accent, actually... Nevertheless: if something on youtube is gettin on your nerves, just stop watching or stop whining, dude.

I'm pretty sure it's a German accent, actually... Technically he's Canadian, but, c'mon - Skallagrim Nilsson sounds German to you? Maybe you're thinking of Jörg Sprave.

Even though he does get on my nerves, I still watch sometimes because his work does have merit, and I already said I think his reviews are often excellent from a consumer perspective.

Swords? Maybe not. More like axes, hammers, and knives. We shall see what I dig out. I'm not hoarding that much, actually.

uh oh, budget swords coming up on classifieds? This shameful hoarder is ready.... Love the reference. Always liked to think I was the Clint Eastwood character or at least the Lee Van Cleef character but in reality was probably the guy pointing the camera or getting coffee☹️Anyway looking for want to listings.

I get as excited over a $30 vintage folding knife as a $3,000 17th century antique I use as a coat rack.
I would judge my own cynicism regarding swords much like some feel about videos and the general complacency found in a lot of discussions. Not so much misunderstood information but essays written while learning. Touting expertise comes with expectations that sometimes fall short in dissertation.
Fifteen years of study focused on a few decades of the early American sword market still leaves me a lifetime to learn more about those years. As such, I am able to abstract in discussing some aspects and point to sources of information while offering some of my own findings.
Along the way (and back to the dawn of the internet) discussion groups have tended to go with the flow. Often those same dissertations. Essays on the fly. Works in progress and I am really no different in that. It is when Matt, Skal, or a host of others publish widely and then in doing so set themselves up as experts. This is where both the cynicism and complacency set it. Looking for a quick review? Head to youtube or the review section. Looking for expertise to quote? Head to youtube or discussions and reviews. The cynicism is fostered in knowing the fast food lane is superficial and complacency a mindset that the superficial is more than enough to absorb.
So, I find I am cynical about the superficial offerings while somewhat complacent about how discussion groups go.

Great discussion and thanks to lebleuchevalier for kicking it off.
Re lebleu's original point, I deal with the cynicism by having an overall trajectory in my European antique collection. I'm trying to work back earlier and earlier over time -- 19th century sabers, then an 18th century smallsword, then 17th century Walloon, then late 16th-early 17th century German sword, now mid-16th century Italian. I finally have the opportunity to look at a supposedly genuine medieval piece as part of a complex trade. Re purpose, I also have small kids who appreciate putting on the white gloves and handling these pieces.
Re edelweiss' point, I agree there's been a loss of respect for true, earned expertise as barriers to entry have fallen and everyone can reach millions via Youtube, etc. One of the things that intensive study teaches you is just how much you don't know about the world. I'm an expert in a couple of things and have a doctorate in one of them. But I'm dumber than sempr!ni about almost everything else.

Pretty sure the accent is fake anyway. He posted a video yesterday where he looks back on his old videos from 7-9 years ago and pretty much gave that away as his accent over the years changed from not having one, to pretty rough and goofy, up to what it is today.

He too often misuses a product and then complains that it doesn't hold up or do what he want even if it isn't intended for such and then put the bad mouth on it. He does have some accurate information and good points, however I've had enough.

This is what sets this sword website apart from the others. It is chatty and congenial!
