Here is the “REVEAL” of the Latest 1st Century Roman Mainz Gladius and Scabbard with its Pugio and Scabbard commission. Before you “Roman Friends and Foes” out there who thrive on “Historical Accuracy” get your knickers tied in a knot… these pieces were commissioned and are custom made items, although “based” off of several origin items, it was designed to the customer's request, and not intended it be a true replica of an existing original piece, but a “One-of-a-kind” piece.
There are many things that are “Historically Accurate” however, such as the Mainz Gladius and Hilt. The shape of the scabbard, scabbard rings, suspension bands and cross bands are all found in Museums and can be found in Christian Mik’s Catalogue on Roman Swords.
The Gladius Scabbard Plates are both Historically Accurate to the period, but not necessarily to actual Archeological discoveries. The Top Locket Plate is base on a lower plate found on the “Sword of Tiberius” in the London Museum. The secondary Locket plate is Mithra. The Chape plate is that of Fortuna. Though these plates have not been found on Roman Scabbards, they are however found in Roman Art, Mosaics, Paintings, Sculptures and Tombstones. I worked at length to design these pieces to my clients requests.
This is also true with the Pugio. The blade is based on an archeological discovery. The hilt is “based on” Sculpture and tombstones. The scabbard Laurels are based on many different “Finds” whereas Medusa is widely known throughout the Roman culture.
Every component is made by me here in my humble little shop. The blades are made from 1075 High Carbon Steel and to historically accurate measurements, weights and balances. The hilts are composed of Brass Guard Plates that are engraved to the client’s desire. Brass Pommel Finials. The guards and pommels are hand carved from European Boxwood. The Grips are hand carved from Holly to simulate Ivory.
The scabbards are basswood cores overlaid with Veg-Tanned Leather and hand sewn seams hidden under the gutter rails. They are dyed. All of the metal work is brass. All of the plates are created by hand using the Repousse~ and Chasing method by hand. The Suspension Rings are cast using the lost wax casting method from brass.
Although I lean heavily into “Historically Accurate” pieces, it is the freedom of my client’s self expression and desires that I serve to make their “Dream” piece a manifestation that they can hold in their hands and admire for years to come.
I am blessed by the clientele that I have served as many of them are return customers. I am here to serve them and make their entire project whether large or small, a living experience as I walk them through the process and involve them every step of the way.
Although my works are not “Perfect” or manufactured, they do carry the feeling of authenticity. There will be a flaw here and there as there may have been in the original craftsman’s pieces, but I am getting better with every new commission and the challenged they bring.
This is the "First" set to bear my new Maker's Marks and the Scabbards are hand signed on the backs.
