Hi everybody, So today I posted a new video and started a new series for my channel. The name of channel is Sword Re-Reviews. What I plan on doing is taking all the swords in my current collection and not only giving them a full video review but also giving a follow up review on how they've held up in my collection over the years. The first sword I re-reviewed is my Windlass Oakeshott Type XIV Sword, so please check out the video and let me know what you think! Also quick thanks to 28shadow for giving me the idea back a few years ago when he re-reviewed his Roven here! Episode 1 The Windlass Oakeshott Type XIV Sword Episode 2 The Windlass Homildon Hill Sword Episode 3 The Windlass Hero's Warsword Episode 4 The Windlass Battlecry Culloden Baskethilt Broadsword

Great idea. I've been contemplating re-reviewing several swords since thoughts change over time. Some better, some worse

I feel like the world needs more re-reviews. So many people will love a given thing, sword or otherwise, when they first get it, write a rave review, and a few months later have decided it's not as good as they thought it was, but they'll never update the review. Mediocre things have great reviews because of this, and it makes convincing people that the thing is actually not that great pretty hard.
Similarly, I've personally found things I once thought were just kinda "meh" or would not rate well in initial impressions have stuck with me the longest and become favorites.

It's why I prefer to wait at least a month (if not many months or even a year) before reviewing a sword so it is put through its paces and is observed over time. Sort of like with firearm reviews how the credible ones regarding performance involve firing hundreds or thousands of rounds before reaching a conclusion.

Absolutely.
If I ever start reading a review, and it starts with "Just got _____________ today," I ignore whatever's being said and just look at pictures. They'll tell me more than immediate infatuation or buyer's remorse will.
Now, if they've "had it for X months now," I'll listen.
Shoot, I've got things I've had for years and keep going back and forth on...

Re-reviews are not a bad idea. I had thought about rewriting some of mine as my ideas sometimes change over time and rarely, but at times, the sword didn’t hold up as expected. That XIV is one of my favourites. Windlass did themselves proud when the introduced that one. I didn’t change the grip but wrapped a heavy duty waxed thread over the leather. The appearance improved and the friction generated in my hand improved.

Hey thanks guys!
Yea I too felt that re-reviews were something missing as far as reviews in general go. I also felt that these re-reviews would be beneficial to the 2nd hand market like our classifieds board so people interested in a used or older sword can instead check out a recent re-review rather than search for old reviews and get more up to date feel of the sword and if it is something they'd want to purchase.
I agree that many reviews are just as you guys said "first impressions" more than a real thorough review and re-reviews like this give a better overall experience of sword ownership. Proper research, thoughtfulness and of course honesty should go into a review. Which is what I've always tried to offer with my written reviews and hope to adhere to with these video reviews.
Thanks again guys for the support and let me know which sword you'd like to see in the next episode. My girls suggested my Hero's Warsword but which sword do you guys think?

What are the choices for the next episode? - Windlass Hero's Warsword
- Windlass European Sword
- Windlass Effigy Sword
- Windlass Classic Medieval Sword
- Windlass Sword of Homildon Hill
- Windlass Battlecry Culloden Baskethilt Sword
- Windlass Towton
- Windlass Sword of Roven
- Musashi Shirakawa Katana
- SnA 1060 Ninja-To
- Deepeeka 1860 Heavy Calvary Saber
- Negrini Fencing Saber
The last two I dont know if they'd be worth the review as they're both well over 20 years old. The Negrini is I think from the 80s from the look of it and I'm not entirely sure the 1860 is a Deepeeka but it looks identical to their 1860 model and it was made in India. Got it as a gift for my 16th birthday from my grandparents so that was 19 years ago the 28th, lol!

It's the steel on the inside that counts.

#1 would be #1 for me. Hero's Warsword. I've been eyeballing that monster for years, and I love what you did to yours!

One of the things that drives me crazy the most on Youtube is "unboxings". My interest is in steel, not cardboard!

The Deepeka cavalry sword is worth comparing but they are considered decorative, even by KOA standards. Visually, nothing much has changed in those twenty years.

Yea I figured that which is why Ive never sharpened it or done much with it. The most action its seen was as a stage prop for a very minimal video production of Macbeth when I was in high school, lol. Being the only guy with swords my group did final battle between Macduff and Macbeth. The swords for the duel were the saber and a wallhanger katana I owned at the time. But it was my first sword and a gift from the grandparents so I've always kept it. Nothing says historical accuracy like a katana vs a Civil War saber filimed in a dried up canal bed in Idaho simulating a Scottish battlefield!

Alright so a vote for the Homildon, Warsword and Baskethilt....
So what do you all think an re-review episode in that order or do we have some more votes to see which goes first?

Nddave, Off topic of the vote but did you see the return of the shrewsbury on the MRL website? I did. Not a bad price being under $200. Especially for MRL retail. Looks like MRL are trying out reviving older models too. Maybe the KOA commissions started a fire? Be nice to see more. Looks better than the original issue too from pics and stats, so maybe its worth a second look?
