Hello! I am currently looking for a good smithery/website that I can buy a customized-to-my-liking Katana. I plan on using it for displaying but ocasionally cutting with it. I also plan to use it more in the future and lend it down to my children, so I prefer if it would be a strong and durable katana. My budget is $2000 or under. I prefer if the steel would be T10 Folded or L6 Bainite. I am in the USA, so I need it to be shipped to the USA if its not made in the USA. If you could recommend several websites, that would be great. I ( obiously ) would like a reputable smithery/forge. If you have any more questions, ill be happy to answer them. Thank you

Thank you for your suggestion. Can you give me 1 or 2 more suggestions other than Evolution Blades? I would like something to compare to. Thank you.

Thank you for your suggestion. Can you give me 1 or 2 more suggestions other than Evolution Blades? I would like something to compare to. Thank you. You can compare against MAS, and higher-priced Hanwei, Dynasty Forge, Kurin. They are in general price point of the sub $2K Evolution Blades (EB) Motohara swords. There's also Skyjiro, Thaitsuki, and other overpriced stuff.... don't bother with those, imo. If you can raise your budget to ~ $3K, there is Citadel, Kotetsu, and customs from some smiths. That said, performance and overall blade/component/assembly quality of the EB Motohara stuff is unmatched in the price point they play in ($1600 - $3500). IME, IMO.

Not much for custom options on for that price point unless you want unpolished bare blade or a polished blade in shirasaya. For 1-2k there is several other options but the cost of mounting it or getting it polished will cost more than the price of a fully mounted motohara sword. 1) James raw - around 1k to 1.5k for a polished bare blade. 2) przemek : usually charges around 1.5k to 2k for a polished blade in shirasaya. 3) modern tool steel by pavel Bolf : charges around 1 to 1.1k for a polished bare blade. 4) modern tool steel by radovan : charges around 900 usd to 1k for a polished bare blade.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Im currently looking for a full katana and not a bare blade scince I know I will screw up if I even try putting it together. I could raise my price to $4,000 or even $5,000 however it would take longer for me to save up and such. I can do anything for under $5,500 however, as i mentioned, it will take a longer time for me to save up for a blade ( 1 - 2 more years ). If you could recommend a smithery that makes custom katanas/shinken for under $5.5k and/or for under $3k, that would be greatly apprechiated. Thank you.

There is a lot of custom smiths that can do swords fully mounted for 5.5k but usually there isn’t a one stop shop for a fully mounted blade. Most custom smiths usually send out their blades to polishers, koshirae market, fitting makers , and so on.
Here is a list of smiths that can do a fully mounted blade for 5.5k or under .
1) Josiah boomershine- he trained under Rick Barrett . fitting maker, sword polisher, and is capable of fully mounting a blade but he’s not well proficient yet on lacquering saya. 2) pavel Bolf - a fully mounted oroshigane can probably run you anywhere from 3.8k to 4.5k . At the moment he doesn’t offer a full koshirae options for his modern steel because of queues. 3) radovan - has the capacity to do a full mounted also and is able to polish the blade himself. 4) Michael sabatier : I’m not familiar with his work but he’s able to do a full mount katana but I heard there has been some difficulties with him recently.

Thank you shobutengu for the 4 suggestions. If you wanted to buy a katana/shinken for under 5.5k, who would you go to? Would like to hear your opinion, Thanks.

It’s up to you to decide. Each Smith has their own personal interpretations of the japanese sword . each with their own sugata geometry. Do you preferred traditional aesthetics with oroshigane or do you prefer modern steel? It’s up to you to decide who you like .
For me , It’s Rick Barrett . I like his overall interpretation of a Japanese sword with beautiful aesthetics yet tough and durable .
