I'm currently having a bit of a hard time finding any definite sources on the types of swords used by Spanish Conquistadors in the Americas. As I understand, the most likely result seems to be rapier-like swords, but I don't know much about rapiers. It also seems possible that the swords simply had hand guards similar to those of rapiers, but different, more cutting-oriented blades. Mind you I'm by no means a sword aficionado, so these are just guesses.
If anyone has any examples, and even better, sources from which to buy a functional example, I'd appreciate it.

I. Would suggest a cut and thrust sword of almost any nationality origin. An infantry short sword or archers style sword of medieval or renaissance provenance would be perfect as well, depending on your portrayal.

If you ever get to st. Augustine, there two swords on display at the Castillo de San Marcos that were gifts from the king of Spain to the US on our bicentennial that are magnificent.

I was there in 1998 and for the life of me don't remember the specifics. I remember a few small displays but 20 years and a stroke seems to have wiped that memory stick. I had spent about an hour or so roaming around up top and a park ranger mentioned it worth checking out the museum inside. I remember a single room, reading a lot of text and I do recall swords but I don't remember what they looked like ( ??). Some armour and partizans. It was a quick stop that day which began in Orlando, then the space museum before jaunting north and then back down to the Daytona raceway for several days of sports cars.

Man, that A&A Serenissima is quite nice, but I certainly can't afford a $1000+ sword right now. I might look into Darkwood armory as suggested for a custom piece.
And that article is great, by the way. (Even after google's hit-or-miss auto translation.)
