Hello folks. Haven’t posted here in a bit, but here is my list of planned acquisitions for this year and early next year. This list is in rough order of when I plan on getting the stuff.
Custom Petersen type A Norse Axe from a local Smith group. It’s going to be as accurate as possible with forge welded edge and all.
Complete historically accurate Viking clothing kit. Oseberg boots, wool tunic, linen undertunic, wool trousers, fabric trouser belt, leather over tunic belt, and wool cap.
(Maybe) a historically accurate Viking shield with leather cover on front and back, as per recent research.
And finally, the crown jewel! A completely historically accurate geibig type 1 late migration period/early Viking age sword by Rob Miller from Castle Keep! That’s gonna be the prize of my collection! I have everything researched, including distal taper metrics from geibig. It’s going to behave as close to the originals as possible!
Now the bittersweet news. I am going back to college for at least a bachelors and hopefully a PhD after that in January. That means not only am I ending my job, I will be spending a ton on school as well. So I will likely have to take a hiatus after that for an unknown but extend period. Not to worry though! I will still be as active here as I can be with my schedule. I’m not going anywhere.

Sounds like a good plan. I think we discussed this in the past, but a bit of temporary pain and sacrifice to finish school now will net you more and better toys in the future.

I'd be interested in this recent research... Could you share your source? Please and thanks!

It's the steel on the inside that counts.

If you decide to go the *not-so-historically-accurate* route on that leather covered shield, shoot me a PM.

If you decide to go the *not-so-historically-accurate* route on that leather covered shield, shoot me a PM. I may very well do that actually. It’s really hard finding anyone who can make one. It doesn’t have to be 100% accurate, just reasonably close. Doesn’t need 100% Scandinavian lambskin leather, cowhide will do fine.

So I'm actually in talks with Thengthrand to make me a shield like he made himself recently. That would be awesome.

Excellent! Thanks a lot. I remember reading about a Viking shield that was put together without any kind of nails; it would make sense that leather was used to keep everything together.

congrats dude, looks like you have a theme going lol, what kinda steel is rob miller gonna be doing for your piece? Probably EN45 like the vast majority of his swords. I can't afford pattern welding, and not every type 1 blade was pattern welded so it's still largely historical.

Good luck for your studies, and at least post pics of the Migration Era sword when you get it.

Congrats! Not bittersweet at all. What's your field?
And you managed to complete a field of study with historical armaments. As a testament to my squirrely and scatter brained nature, I've yet to conclude study with any one area. Sigh...

I just have an Associates in Liberal Arts Summa right now but am going into Biology.
