Hey Guys,
I wanted to make a little review for my DSA Five Lobe Viking Sword, this is my first and only sword i ever owned, so this is obviously my first sword review. Please keep this in mind while reading my review. Also, english isn't my first languag, so if there is a part or a sentence wich doesn't make any sense and you can't understand what i want to say, feel free to tell me and I will try to make it more understandable.
I bought this Sword 1 1/2 year ago and could hold it in my hands since around 1 year. I bought it from Swords-and-more.de, on the Page they said it would take around 3-4 weeks to deliver, but in the end it took 4-5 months. If it was the fault of DSA or the Website wich just lied about the delivery time, I don't know.
When I unpacked the Sword i was surprised, there was a belt on the scabbard, wich i didn't ordered or paid for, so maybe a mistake or apology for the long waiting time?
I really really like how the Sword looks, in my Opinion it's one of the most beautiful Viking Era Sword you can buy, I only like "The Jarl" from Albion more, wich looks pretty similar, but I didn't have the money for an Albion so the DSA would do. I like the more simple look and the Five Lobed Pommel.
Stats:(Copied from Kult of athena, if someones interested i could measure my sword and look if it differs)
Overall Length: 36 1/4'' Blade: 30 5/16''
Blade: 5160 High Carbon Steel
Weight: 2 lb 9.1 oz
P.O.B.: 8 1/4'', Mine is around 19cm/7 1/2"
Thickness: 4.2 mm - 3.9 mm
Width: 53 mm
Grip Length: 4''
Pommel: Peened
There aren't major flaws, at least none that i can/could see, if you look very(!) closely you can see that the fuller is slightly wavy, don't know if this is normal or not, but it doesn't bother me. The only thing I saw immidiatly is that there is a gab between the sword and the guard, wich seems quite big to me and i hope that will not become a problem (Any Opinions?). As for now, everything is fitted thight and nothing moves at all.
The PoB is like mentioned around 19cm/7 1/2" from the Guard, it feels a little blade heavy for me, but maybe i'm just to untrained with Swords and i get used to it. Is this within the range of a Viking Era Sword?
The scabbard looks good and at first it did hold the sword in place, but now the Sword literally flys out of the scabbard if you hold it in a down side angle and it rattles in it.
I ordered the sharpening service from Swords-and-more (it wasn't sharpened from DSA) and it was very disappointing, can't even cut through paper, seems like i have to learn sharpen it myself
Last Weekend my Brother and I had the chance to go Test Cutting with this Sword and well, we couldn't cut semprini
This is probably because 1. We don't have any Technique, we know about edge alignment and tried to get it right but yeah.... you will see
2. Like said, the edge isn't sharp at all, and 3. our set up was very... improvised.
None of the Bottles were really cut, most just exploded from the impact, maybe one was a little bit cut but not really (the bottle was filmed).
I was a little bit worried, 'cause the well known storys about DSA Swords, I told my Brother about it, but he must forgot it very quickly, 'cause he savagely swung it and hit a bucket quite hard, but spoilers, the sword did just fine and survived, this was by no means abusive but still good to know i can do test cutting with it. As i watched the Videos we were quite dumb filming in front of each other, not 'cause the DSA but in general, don't think one should do this no matter wich sword is used.
But we still had a LOT of fun!
Here is the Video, with 1-2 funny moments at the end (ps.: I'm the long haired guy):
Overall I like this Sword very much, the stats seem historically correct. I hope with some training and a proper edge I can cut some Bottles and even wet newspaper with it, it feels save in the Hand and looks amazing (IMO). Accept the gap in the guard, the fit and finish is really good. The Scabbard could fit better, beside that, i'm very pleased with it!
I can't wait to get a Second Sword so i have a little bit of a compartment, next one is gonna be a Hanwei Tinker Longsword wich are luckly available in Germany.
