Alright, long story short: I want to try this Bauernwehr thing, too. The steel of choice is D2 this time. Bought a bar 40x6x800mm and decided to give this "pocket knife" a length of 600mm. 200mm for other projects go into the lair.
Man. This kind of steel is really hard to work with. Got alarmed when I saw the first sparks while using the angle grinder. Not the usual yellow ones which fly through the entire room. No, deep orange, nearly red ones with ultra short lifetime. But I knew it before, because the description of the steel says: machining D2? meh . But just for you guys: D2 needs an extra portion of elbow grease. Wonder how tough it is to grind after HT. I suspect nothing good... But enough whining!
A flat grind per side is given to this blade. The hardest part was to draw the flats over the transition into the tang area. Not sure about the tang's end, might change the silhouette a little bit.
Distal taper is 6 to 5mm until now, but might become a little more like up to 4mm towards the tip after draw filing. Maybe that's not the worst idea, when you have to handle such a lack of profile taper .
I'll add two shells where the "Nagel" will be placed and the rest of the grip will be from stabilized flamed poplar. Didn't decide for the color yet.

Small progress. I gave the grip shells some rough silhouette with the jigsaw. Kinda hurted to harm the nice wood block. The black stuff is vulcan fibre. I will place it between the green shells and the steel shells later. From the little rod I made two mosaic pins. Next step is grinding the stainless steel shells, where the Nagel will be later.

Thanks guys!
Tomorrow I will focus on the rest of the metal parts. Let's see, how far I come.
And after that, the HT still waits. But that's a job I can't do myself. Want/must to try the company "Dictum" this time (the previous hardening service from the company "Schmiedeglut" doesn't heat treat steels longer than 400mm anymore ) . They're quite a name here in Germany for making good files and stuff like that.

Some progress!
Managed to build the metal shells, build a Nagel and distal tapered the green scales. What you see is a very rough state, but should give us an impression, what it might look one day.
Weight is 558g currently.

And a little bit working on the Nagel. Still has some dings and dongs and irregularities, but I'll try to make them vanish.

Thank you guys!
Yes, please. There should be more WIP threads here .
Blade arrived at the HT meanwhile. Hope it'll come back as straight as it was.

The blade is back from HT!
Unfortunately with a pretty bad bending on the blade area near the tang (no sabering). So tomorrow is straightening day with the torch, after the scale oxide is removed.
But more interesting is my desired protocol from the hardness tests. They took 3 points for the test. Tang on the left side, right side and frontal on the cutting edge. I asked them for 58 HRC at the end. And I think they did it not too bad. Cool thing with those microscopic pictures from the diamond pyramid (Vickers hardness). The whole package for 35 Euros .

Happy shitday to me...
Tried to straighten it still today. Holes can be a serious trap as you can see... First fail for me ever. This blade will become a little bit shorter now...
But I don't give up that fast. I'll rebuild this blade again from 56Si7 / 1.5026 steel.

Oh, that’s sad. I wish you more luck for the next time. This will be such a nice piece.
