I'm eating my words here... For a long time, I have been the kind of person who has said that 'if it isn't functional and authentic, I don't like it' and stated my disdain for Kit Rae's swords - never doing much more than glancing at them and dismissing them as stainless steel without so much as a second look... However, recent months and some of the new Darksword fantasy designs sparked my latent interest in fantasy blades again (a long time pen and paper RPGer) and inevitably, having decided to create a new page for fantasy swords on SBG, I had to check out a couple of Kit Rae's swords myself... And after buying a couple and seeing them first hand - It's official - not only do I eat my words, but Kit has just earned himself my upmost respect and total admiration! Reviews will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks, but I just wanted to post about it because the design and execution of his blades is true art of the highest form. Sure, technically they are not functional swords - but when they look and feel this good, as long as everyone knows that they aren't meant to be used, I don't think it detracts from the work he does in the least! - Paul

do you think if we sent him a video of his swords being destroyed with some full tang carbon steel blades he would stop makeing garbage wall hangers and start making real blades

I think perhaps, given Paul's enthusiastic post, we should wait to see what he reviews and his results, before coming to such hasty and brash conclusions.
I can't wait, I've been a fan of the Sword of Darkness design since I was a kid. I wish he'd do more stuff as simplistically elegant as that.

A friend of mine got a Kit Rae sword, imagining that it must have been functional, but got a blunt hunk of stainless steel. Flashy look, but ultimately lame. Would it kill Kit to make a full tang sword?

I second swordboy. Partially from a terrible personal experience, my friend had one of the swords of the ancients, he tried to cut a friggin watermelon, the top 1/3rd of the blade snapped off and sliced my back, leaving a shallow but painful cut.

I do not think you can point fingers at Kit Rae for this (unfortunate) event. He does not sell weapons, he sells art.

Still I hold a resentment for kit rae because of this, partially because they advertised it as a fully functional sword. Although it wasn't kit rae he bought it from. Anyways that was a few years ago. So imagine an 8 year olds response to that.

I feel the marketing involved in many swords is unfortunate and many are taken down the garden path by the use of what may be puffery. What is the swords 'function'? For that particular sword, a reasonable person may believe its function is art (e.g. not intended for a martial art tool) and does not require substantiation.

I think that as long as everyone understands that they are 'sword art' and not functional swords, I don't think its a problem...
As I said, I used to have a slightly snobbish attitude towards them because they weren't functional. But in time, my attitude as mellowed and I am able to appreciate them for what they are...
And there is no doubt that they are extremely aesthetically pleasing to a fantasy sword enthusiast.
Cheers,
- Paul

I don't personally see why he can't make his designs in functional form. There is no physical reason why it isnt possible.
Although they would of course be very very very expensive.

The swords are meant to be decorative.

I have 2 Kit Rae swords already- Kilgorin II and Anathros, and plan on getting most or all of the swords of ancients collection. www.kitrae.net/fantasy/swords_of_the_ancients.htmlI really like the newest- Exotath, which will be the next sword I buy. Also slightly off track but there is a band that labels themselves as "epic battle metal" that is called Elexorien after the Kit Rae sword of that name. elexorien.com/I haven't been able to find them in the US but the CD was worth the extra shipping to get to the US from Amazon UK.

ironiclly I have spoken to a few folks at both bud-k and united cutlery and they fell the same way saying if there is enough support for a line of swords made of better steel they would take it to the higher-ups and may be just may be we could see a run of kit rae swords that would be good for cutting
