It really is a bad one. Think about it,you yourself say you're very new to this. And then you advise someone with a $2000 budget, practicing a Koryu, based on your $130 purchase from them. Bad is an understatement really

Hi everyone, I have been lurking on the forum for a while and was hoping to join in with a first post on the topic of "Please help me find my first sharp katana .." I am looking for a sword to use in my Iaido (MJER) practice but have been struggling to find something that meets my needs. Particularly I was wondering if the community could help point me towards production Japanese style swords that have a 2.45 to 2.5 shaku (29" or so) nagasa with a ~11" tsuka. My budget goal for this purchase is ideally under 2000. Unfortunately most of the highly regarded swords I have been looking at (Hanwei Tori XL for eg.) have 28.5" nagasa and I really prefer something just a little longer for my practice. I was looking at a Bugei custom but they shut down as I was preparing to order I have since been looking at Hanwei, Dynasty, and Skyjiro, but have almost no knowledge of the other brands outside of these options. Among the brands that have caught my attention I have a few nagging concerns: Things that have concerned me on Dynasty: I have heard of cases of very loose ito. Things that have concerned me about Skyjiro: Some pictures show habaki that don't look well fitted, well others look great. The kumo is aesthetically pleasing but that fuchi texture looks like it could be a bit rough. Things that have concerned me about Hanwei: Most of the nice ones are only 28.5", also some very long tsuka. My "Needs": 2.45 to 2.5 shaku nagasa (29" or so) Chu Kissaki with a obvious yokote that you can feel. Tight Tsuka ito Not too flashy in terms of fitting and saya colour. Horn koiguchi Good line up between tsuka and saya (I have seen some bad examples that look bent or offset) Differentially hardened with a hamon. Strong Wants Bo Hi (almost a need) Tsuka ideally less than 12", I can shorten myself if needed but I am not comfortable if I might need to cut the nakago as well. Ideally tsuka not shimmed on so I can take it apart for maintenance. Subtle hamon with an ok polish is nicer to me than obvious etching. Full wrap Samegawa would be nice. I would generally like to avoid too much of a project. With a young kid I dont see having the time to fully rewrap a tsuka in the near future. I'd rather pay a little more, but if it's worth it I could make the time. Any help you could offer pointing me towards options would be great! also try ryujin or sinoswords

He said it's a bad recommendation because at the price point and quality level the creator of this thread is using as criteria, it is a bad recommendation.
Same with Sinosword. There's big differences in quality between the less expensive 'custom suite' Longquan forges and stuff like high end Hanwei, Bugei or Motohara. Not just in blade characteristics and polish, but also fittings, assembly and overall 'feel'.
Shobutengu has been around awhile and knows quite a bit.

You should really do more research before asking stupid questions that can be easily found with just a simple google search. The op stated that he want something that will last and hold up to his practice but you’re just rehashing budget brands ,which you have no experience with, that in no ways or even remotely close to the quality that other people recommended .

Experienced practitioners with years of experience know their stuff. Swords of Northshire or Sinosword aren't bad for what they are, but they're not high end build quality for dedicated martial artists. They won't implode in and of themselves, but they're nothing like what other options a dedicated practitioner with a higher budget can nab.

I had 24'' iaito made for my 13 years old son by Sinosword/JKOO for 119$ US + shipping, its not very good to be honest.
Horrible habaki to saya fit, bo-hi is possibly badly shaped and don't produce any tachikaze outside of the most powerful swings (even by me, an adult), bad blade profile with 1 mm wide blunt edge, you see and feel the grind marks on the edge. Means the blade is overly thick at the ha, which add to the weight and likely make it harder to obtain tachikaze which is somewhat important to iaido.
Had two tsuka made, badly made mekugi holes, one of the mekugi don't even fit on the spare tsuka. Had to be creative to replace the original that came on the sword as I had asked for a battle wrap and the menuki are very prominent and edges are square and cut the hand, so had to replace it with the spare that had the regular wrap.
Sageo was ripped, had to replace it, saya is full of of esthetic defects, fuchi/kashira edges stick out a bit of the itomaki and bite the hand, bad habaki to blade fit. Tsuba cast is ugly.
The only things good is the itomaki tightness, everything else is average or bad.
Won't even talk about the tanto I had ordered made and received at the same time for my wife...
Avoid JKOO for a custom iaito.
I wil l do a review when I get the time.

Hanwei does make nice swords.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and advice.
So after much internal debate, I ended up ordering a Motohara (L6 in "General purpose geometry").
The ordering process was smooth so far and I'm excited to get my hands on the sword in about 8 weeks. I'll post when I receive it. This is going to be feel like a long wait (although it's actually pretty fast).
