Yeah I am considering picking up a bargain shinken as well just for fun. The practicals seem like pretty good value for the money (a functional sword for less than the sales tax on the others I have been looking at).
I am very much leaning to a motohara as new primary sword They look pretty darn nice based on the examples I have found online. There are two on ebay right now that look mighty tempting...

Nothing on the market comes close to Motohara right now,not in blade, koshirae or mount quality.Simply the best thing available near their prices.

If you buy anything from SOTE message first and ask if they actually have it in stock. They have a history of listing stuff they dont have or that is out of stock.

If you plan on training in MJER long term, and have a $2K budget, I would say don't waste your time or money on lesser stuff. Nothing competes with Motohara in the $1600 - $3.5K range. Even if you don't cut, the koshirae, assembly quality, and balance/handling of the Motohara swords is like high-dollar iaito, and made tougher and more durable to hold up to extensive cutting usage.

here is some pics of my motohara , the balance is amazing for the type of cutter it is. everything is done correctly with no saya rattle. the tsuka has a correct shape and the itomaki is extremely tight . imgur.com/a/kVJb0Pcimgur.com/a/62lTq3Mi agree with skane and maewyn that motohara is best thing on the market right now at that price point . a lot of my friends also has them too and two recently recieved their D2 models which i'm about to place my order soon after i figured what type of edge geometry and koshirae that i want.

Yep, the Motohara light and middle weight mat cutter models are great for people that want one sword that excels for cutting and live blade kata.

That is one fine looking sword.... I need to contact evolution blades and get some pricing and option details. The real tough question now is leather vs silk ito

I referred to the ones where people were recommending everything but what was asked for and suggesting alternative courses of action. Hence why I didn't specify everyone But still. Better than no answers Also, what's foolish is thinking I care that much what you think

Hi everyone, I have been lurking on the forum for a while and was hoping to join in with a first post on the topic of "Please help me find my first sharp katana .." I am looking for a sword to use in my Iaido (MJER) practice but have been struggling to find something that meets my needs. Particularly I was wondering if the community could help point me towards production Japanese style swords that have a 2.45 to 2.5 shaku (29" or so) nagasa with a ~11" tsuka. My budget goal for this purchase is ideally under 2000. Unfortunately most of the highly regarded swords I have been looking at (Hanwei Tori XL for eg.) have 28.5" nagasa and I really prefer something just a little longer for my practice. I was looking at a Bugei custom but they shut down as I was preparing to order I have since been looking at Hanwei, Dynasty, and Skyjiro, but have almost no knowledge of the other brands outside of these options. Among the brands that have caught my attention I have a few nagging concerns: Things that have concerned me on Dynasty: I have heard of cases of very loose ito. Things that have concerned me about Skyjiro: Some pictures show habaki that don't look well fitted, well others look great. The kumo is aesthetically pleasing but that fuchi texture looks like it could be a bit rough. Things that have concerned me about Hanwei: Most of the nice ones are only 28.5", also some very long tsuka. My "Needs": 2.45 to 2.5 shaku nagasa (29" or so) Chu Kissaki with a obvious yokote that you can feel. Tight Tsuka ito Not too flashy in terms of fitting and saya colour. Horn koiguchi Good line up between tsuka and saya (I have seen some bad examples that look bent or offset) Differentially hardened with a hamon. Strong Wants Bo Hi (almost a need) Tsuka ideally less than 12", I can shorten myself if needed but I am not comfortable if I might need to cut the nakago as well. Ideally tsuka not shimmed on so I can take it apart for maintenance. Subtle hamon with an ok polish is nicer to me than obvious etching. Full wrap Samegawa would be nice. I would generally like to avoid too much of a project. With a young kid I dont see having the time to fully rewrap a tsuka in the near future. I'd rather pay a little more, but if it's worth it I could make the time. Any help you could offer pointing me towards options would be great! Talk to bryce at Swords of northshire. for that price they could get u T10 clay tempered custom sword leangth and what ever else u wanted

I would ignore this suggestion. and why is that? Cause it’s a bad recommendation.
