LebleuChevalier, I just recently got this sword from Amazon it was on sale for 183 dollars or so. Quite an impressive piece of steel and came in at much higher quality then I was expecting. The sheath is very smooth and doesn't feel flimsy I can see the wood core inside it. The blade is very clean and straight and is semi sharp to sharp in some places. (No secondary bevel its made as a sharp from factory.) It has a presence very different from other blades I have held and really hammered home the concept that two handed swords are not just big longswords. I thought I would rehandle it and put a different guard on it when I ordered it, however it works so well together in person I dropped that plan the minute we unsheathed it. It's 6lbs but can still be used efficiently two handed. I plan on doing a proper right up and review with pictures as soon as time allows. It does have a deep scratch in the guard which might be why the price was so cheap but their is so much steel it can easily be ground and buffed out.

Nice review!...but, what is meant by “medium carbon steel”? Other places that sell this sword list it as being 1060. I plan to send a list of questions, including this one, to Ryan at Kult of Athena for clarification. Advertised in many stores in Germany as 1060 too.

I had the same experience as Darth. The scabbard on mine got a crack and it was pretty thin wood with that weird coating. But definately wood as I tried to saw and tweak it for another sword. Scabbard cracked too.

Sharp blades are good to have, if Shire-folk go walking, east, south, far away into dark and danger.

Ha! So you were checking this out too! Mixed reviews...some say soft steel, not 1060. Did you ever get one? I see it's $230 on Amazon, but it says Rite Edge, not Kawashima. Are they the same? Says right on the Kult website description that it's soft tempered. With such a long blade I think that would be...bad. Too easy to bend or ding. Nice price, but no thanks...I'd rather have something functional. For all the previous conversations it seems it ISN'T 1060 unless the steel has been changed or perhaps it's a soft version of it? Is there such a thing? Attachments:

No, I never did get one. I thought it was best to design something I would be happiest with instead. And I realized I wanted something slightly smaller anyway.

I edited my post but short story is, the more I look into it, the less I like it. Best to build your own!

As an entry level piece, it has many good qualities. Our own Phil Martin put this sword to the test and it performed pretty well. I think the hesitation on my part was real concern over the quality control of the sword.

Well I went ahead and got one! My Greatsword is HUGE! I'm 5'6" and it's just a couple inches shorter than me!The wire wrap areas are loose, which everyone warned me about, so I'll have to glue them down or put leather over top. Curious just to remove them and see what's underneath. HEAVY!! 6 lbs I think ! You could melt it down and make a Buick and have metal left over! And it's sharp, with no secondary bevel! Not hair shaving but paper slicing for sure. I gotta be careful not to have my ceiling fans going when holding it. The box it came it was opened. One small piece of tape was the only thing keeping it in place, and at 6 lbs and sharp, very dangerous! Just a few pieces of styrofoam keeping it in there. If it had fallen out and hit somebody, you're talking serious damage. It's not something I'll be handling very often... certainly not while watching TV! But it's a cool piece to add to my collection and oooh and aaahhh over every so often. Attachments:

What a perilous delivery! I'm glad it reached you without serious injury. It might make for a fun project.

The scabbard has a wood core and the blade came waxed, so apart from the flimsy cardboard box it was packaged ok, but yeah, very lucky. It could have been a lot worse.
