I had the same experience as Darth. The scabbard on mine got a crack and it was pretty thin wood with that weird coating. But definately wood as I tried to saw and tweak it for another sword.

Wood with coating for my Longsword scabbards, too.

Mine has a scrape that shows more plastic, or lacquer, as the case may be.

I'm reminded of when I was convinced my Hanwei shashka had a plastic handle, based on outward look and feel, but then others pressed that it was certainly wood, perhaps heavily lacquered/painted, so I scraped it a bit and found that it was definitely wood underneath.

After close examination, my scabbard appears to be plastic tubing. At least it feels strange. On mine its definitely wood; i can tell because my scabbard got a crack from shipping. It seems to be wood encased in an almost plastic like lacquer or coating. The Kawashima/"Ronin #7" Longsword has the same thing with it. No leather scabbard/belt. Neither here nor there in this topic, but I think that Ronin and Kawashima get from different suppliers considering the different steels used. Where was the crack on your scabbard? Would suck if it was near the throat.

Great review as well. Can't believe I missed out on commenting on it when it was put out.

"Dont make me a customer of yours. You wont like me when i am a customer of yours..."

For example Ronin requesting 1065 for their "custom European line" and then the forge making more budget focused models for the open market. The swords are too identical to not be made by the same manufacturer or forge.

That's one thing I've learned after a few years in the sword community: never trust (most) manufacturer steel-type claims. Whether it's Ryansword's tamahagane/sanmai, TFW's D2-5160 blend, DSA's 60 HRC edge with 40 HRC spine claims. Honestly as much as I love Evolution Blades, I really highly doubt they have pure D2 swords (so many smiths have already said it's extremely hard to heat treat, and that it doesn't lend itself well to differential heat treatment since it's air hardening, and is also extremely difficult to forge-weld lol TFW)
Custom swordmakers, you can definitely trust them in general. So long as they don't use recycled steel. No knock on recyclers, but that's really just for the amateurs.
At the end of the day though, despite the false advertising, these swords from Chinese/Indian/Filipino forges are quite decent, this type XVIIIe being no exception. I really loved mine.

Damn, that’s some brass ones! Wondering how much they’re selling it for. 😏 Since it is one of the very few European swords I like I wonder if they will give me a good deal on it. Haha

Doesnt seem uncommon for this kind of thing to happen. There's also an etsy store that posts windlass swords for sale at inflated prices saying that they make them.

Haha The sucker offered me a "special price" if i do a testing session against mine... well it was special: "Here we would like to offer you our version of this sword, with 65Mn spring steel, in our specifications, 550 euros for sword only. If you insist a scabbroad, we can offer you our handmade wood scabbard (which we usually charge additional $200USD)" The thing here sells betweeen 250 and 330 Euros... Attachments:

I just checked the argument link and I don't know if you noticed but their "forge proof" is literally those swords (didn't he say it was a one of a kind made by him?) Like four of them wrapped in Chinese newspaper with a clear as day Chinese style electrical outlet behind the rack! So either this swordsmith is Chinese and either works for Zeng Forge or he's your typical Chinese Fleabay seller who's new angle is Facebook.
