My center grip will be steel with MUCH leather padding, btw.

I made one for my 11 year old using a 2x2 foot 1/4" fiberboard from the home depot ($3.74) and a dog bowl from the dollar store . Painted it black and yellow with latex paint left over from other projects. unfortunately I'm not smart enough to transfer the photo I was about to do this too haha. I had the perfect sized dog bowl. I didn't have a way to punch holes so maybe I'll use a boss in the future

Ah...rope... So, some of the more industrious SCA folks have started gluing rope to their shield edges, then covering it with rawhide. THEN...sewing the rawhide to the shield. Good lord its time consuming, but I've seen the plywood break down before the edges fail. So add that to your 'imma try that someday' project list.
I did it once. Once only.

I was thinking more along the lines of glue and small nails to hold the rope on. Nails or fence staples. Bend the staples out to accommodate the rope, then bend the points inward. Slide onto the rope, then hammer the staples into the sides of the shield, like making a D-ring. Might not be historically correct, but then, neither am I.
