Hi everybody, So last week I got around to refinishing my Homildon Hill handle and did a grip wrap to it and my Classic Medieval Sword. I got some nice deer skin at Tandy Leather out of a grab bag and used the two different colors in it for the grips. The one came very close to being the same color as the Homildon's scabbard though a little more orange in color. The other color was a brighter goldenrod color ( pretty much work glove color) but it's what was there so I gave it a go. It's not my favorite color but it works. Anyway here's the two finished grips, Let me know what you think. Thanks, David

Both look really nice, David. Good work there! Out of curiosity, what do you use for risers? I have yet to attempt a wrap myself, but am getting an itch to.

I've found it pretty cheap at Hobby Lobby ($3.99 to be exact) it comes in a 5 yard spool. The brand name is "On-A-Cord" if you want to look it up. Definitely give it a shot. Not only is it a fun extra way to enjoy you're swords but you also get the chance to personalize or improve the look or handling of them if you're not a fan of the factory grips.

That's good to know. I think I have about all the materials I need except for something for risers. I have a few swords I was thinking of doing new wraps for. Problem is I'm not too skilled or good at handiwork, so to speak. I've got most of the materials. Its just a matter of whipping up the courage to give things a try.

Problem is I'm not too skilled or good at handiwork, so to speak. I've got most of the materials. Its just a matter of whipping up the courage to give things a try. Practice and patience goes a long way. In the end its just leather, some cord, string and glue. Easy to remove if you mess up and try again. Best two tools to have is some good sharp siccors or razor knives to cut and finish the leather and a table vise if wrapping a full sword that is peened and or the handle cant be removed. I did a little tutorial when I posted my European Sword re-wrap. Here's a link to it if you want to check it out, sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/45608/windlass-european-sword-grip-tutorialThe only thing not in it was an under cord wrap, as I didn't do one on that sword at the time. They're easy though. Just take some cotton thread spread a little amount of epoxy on the bare handle and give it a nice uniform over wrap. The glue should stay tacky but not dry as you wrap unless you're doing a longer handle. Then I'd suggest spreading glue in halves as you work up the handle.

Thanks for the link, David! That's extremely helpful. I have quite a few sword projects I want to work on, but might not find time until Summer. Most hilts don't need a new wrap; I just would like a new look.
My Windlass Sword of the King (looks just like the Edward III sword, except coat of arms of the Kingdom of Jerusalem rather than England) has a hemp wrap in four different sections. Due to use, the section closest the pommel came undone. I've decided the whole thing should just be redone, rather than have a section that looks different from the others. That will probably be the first wrap I attempt.
Your link and advice will come in very handy when the time comes. Thanks for that, as well as the encouragement!
Do you have any other hilt wraps that you've done, or maybe future projects?

Daaang, that redone Homildon Hill looks sweet! Gives me inspiration to take a stab at customizing mine. Very nicely done

It's the steel on the inside that counts.

Really quality work there! Ever try using craft-store hemp cord for an under-wrap? It's generally thicker than cotton cord, and makes more pronounced lines under the leather over-wrap. It'll be 'fuzzy' from all the little strands coming off, but a shot of hairspray and a flick from a Bic lighter will cure that. I suggest doing this OUTDOORS! I've done cord wraps on Cold Steel tomahawks and axes like this, and it works great. Try it out on some scrap pieces...you'll like it!

Very nicely done Thanks, pretty much my only minor complaint with it was the handle shape as it was too wide for me at top. Shaped it down to where it was flush with the taper and its great to handle now.

Cool, I wish I could do things like this with leather. I stick on tennis grip band in the moment to find out what changes on grips I need for better handling.
