So the thumb up grip is commonly associated with late military Sabre doctrine, but I'm wondering if other weapon systems employed it first? Did spadroon, degen, and other infantry sword utilize thumb up grip?

The books I have, as I have read them, only show that in saber. Now I recently bought a a Hungarian saber text (ebook only on amazon) that has it and it really made me think more of that grip in terms of military saber.
What really pisses me off is how my main military saber (US 1906) does not do that grip worth anything because it would be better. But the way the steel basket is made will not allow it.
