Good morning everyone. I ordered a set of Leather Vambraces from MRL. The items have good reviews. Has anyone purchased these before? What are your thoughts on them. www.museumreplicas.com/leather-vambraces

No experience with those but have a leather pair, my first vambraces and the only leather ones I own. I can’t say the subject ones are good or bad as much depends on your intent. Personally I do not like lace up vambraces as they require assistance to put on or to adjust, so I find those with buckles more to my liking. Not having the greatest confidence in leather’s cut proof ability I lined mine with sheet metal. I ordered mine before obtaining a gambeson or any other armour and find they fit my bare arms well but are too small to use with any of my armour. I put them to good use when working around or on my razor wire fence. They saved me much aggravation and pain. I find metal vembraces more to my liking and have several, my favourite being splint vambraces by Lord of Battles. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SNSA9303&name=Splint+Armor+Bracers Easy to put on, fits well regardless of what I have underneath, not too heavy, and best of all I have confidence in that 16 ga. metal.

Thanks pgandy. I was looking for a pair of leather vambraces that had buckle straps but did not find any. All the ones that I looked at were lace up. I just wanted a pair to wear to the Ren Fair here in Atlanta. I have a friend that will take me. I probably won't spend all day but it should be fun nonetheless.
I can probably figure a way to lace them up myself if I put my mind to it.

I can only wish. I don't know if you saw it but DK only has the brown in stock at present.

You read my mind, Sir Gandy! I was thinking that I saw some buckle-up bracers and greaves at Dark Knight/Medieval Collectibles made by Mytholon. There are others besides the 'Simon' models you linked, I believe. Good stuff, that Mytholon....and you don't have to spend a fortune.

COnsider a trick I use for lace ups...use one of those spring beads that you put laces thru. Then snug them up and hide the bead in the lacing. For costume, this works great. ANd if you're really feeling froggy you can make a leather snugging washer that does the same thing and looks a little better.

Sheet man, I been considering those dang things for so many costume projects. Can't seem to find them in stores

I’ve stayed away from lace ups for the inconvenient areas such as arms and my back. I do have some for my legs. Come to think of it I do have one pair for my arms and that’s some padding that I don’t lace but put in place and then fasten metal vambraces over them securing them. I replaced those with a buckle type in short order. I hadn’t thought of cord stops, or whatever they are called. I use a similar device on the chin cords (aka stampede cords) on my sombreros. I have a couple from Australia that are plastic with a spring loaded plunger. The rest are made of natural fibres. Perhaps they would work on lace up armour. Like leather they would be more authentic than plastic. Below are two photos of two cords. The cord on the left has a factory made stop. I assume it’s of horse hair like the two cords. The cord on the left was made in Colombia I can’t remember where the other was made. The stop on the right is one that I made from a local twine when the factory job wore out. I’ve made several such stops. At any rate you have given me food for thought.

It's not perfect, but it's easy, and easy to hide or make look semi-period.

I received the vambraces today. They look pretty good considering the low price. Good quality leather and I didn’t have much trouble lacing them up.

I figured a way to tie them using a pair of stainless steel clamps that doctors use to clamp arteries. My wife left them laying around. Works pretty good. I could have used a set of locking needle nose pliers also.

I basically tied them the same way I would tie my shoelaces and tuck the loose ends under the vambraces.

leather vambrace was a very essential part of the body armor! they were most commonly used by low-level rangers before going for a battle!
