One thing to be mindful of is the weight. The hauberk alone weighs over 20 lbs. My riveted is only about 15 lbs. but feels a lot lighter once on my body. Im used to wearing body armor at work, the weight wont bother me....much haha

Would you happen to have links of any recommended Hauberk and matching coif? I'm going for a 1200s Templar look I dont want something that's going to fall apart but also not getting into stage combat. You haven't really read through this whole thread? If you have you would of seen that blunted mail isn't battle ready. It's more for costumes. I also posted a link for a good Hauberk made from Lords Of Battle. Just make sure you get chain mail that is riveted or riveted with solid rings. So it will be four solid rings(washers) with a riveted ring linking them altogether.

I wouldn't say butted mail 'isn't battle ready'....it just won't take a lot of abuse before it start losing rings and needs repair. But, yeah...for costume wear it's fine. Mine is the 4 into 1 round rivet with solid flat ring, and it looks great....but I wouldn't fight in it. The round riveted rings WILL come open with enough force applied. I lost one by snagging on a chainlink fence.

I read and saw the link you posted, but as I stated i'm not trying to break the bank this is mostly for costumes. I would like to eventually one day get into fighting but the current job doesn't exactly allow that. Mostly right now I am looking to collect. If I spend 5-600 on just a hauberk the wife would probably skewer me

When it all comes down to the final word on modern-made mail, there is only one truth: You GET what you PAY for. You can spend $100 or less on eBay or Amazon and have junk that is self-destructing before you ever try it on. You can spend $250-300 and have decent costume mail that looks nice, though maybe not 'historically correct' or 'battle ready'. You can spend $300-700 and have some mail that is tough, fairly well made, and will last a long time and take some abuse. You can spend $700-?,000 and have SCA/HEMA-grade combat mail. Or, you can have custom-made mail that is tailored to fit, historically correct, and better than original mail...by a long way. It will also run you *several* thousands of dollars.
What's that TV commercial saying? Something about---"What's in YOUR wallet?"

I read a review on Amazon of mail so weak that it fell apart just by putting it on. People tend to consider all butted mail equal, which is not true. The size of the rings, wire used, and type of steel used all play a part. It is true that riveted is stronger than butted but there is butted mail that will probably be sufficiently strong enough unless the buyer intends to routinely participate in re-enacting. I believe the butted mail I have will get through one battle, which is one more than I’ll probably ever see, after which I need only to repair the damaged rings, riveted mail I wouldn’t expect repairs necessary.
