I am planning on making stock removal swords, and now that I've spent countless hours reading how to do everything and making some knives with o1 steel, I face this problem. ( Apart from having to make a big forge...)
I live in Greece, and I really can't find 5160 here (apart from scrap leaf springs). I am talking about this particular steel because I have read that it is more forgiving during the quench. After that, I am planning on tempering with a torch till straw/blue color... I believe I'll need a bit more steel to experiment on cause I haven't worked on metal that long. I have read that the term 5160 is american but I really can't find other names for it. I've also learned that some people let the steel manufacturers heat treat their blades. I would 100% prefer this if the transport costs aren't that high. We also have Uddeholm here, but they say that most blades get bent during heat treatment, so I don't trust them.
So,where do you guys get your steel from ? If you can recommend some other type of steel that is available, then I am willing to take the risk and experiment with something weirder than 5160.
Thanks a ton in advance,
Chris

Welcome to the forum Chris. Can't help with any dedicated steel suppliers, you could try finding a leaf spring manufacturer or truck/4wd suspension place. They should be able to help you out with a suitable steel.
