In reference to Zenhydra’s tape idea, I have used cardboard and duck tape over blades but this was only to prevent an accident if the blade came into contact with my sparring partner during a video and not intended for repeated contact strikes. The tape idea could work but I suggest frequent inspections. At present I use masking tape over the edge of my sabre to protect it from its steel scabbard. So far it’s working at retaining a shaving edge. I used the idea earlier on my cutlass and its steel scabbard until I managed to get a leather sheath. On the cutlass I applied the second layer once when the blade appeared like it was cutting through. That edge is holding up well in the leather without tape. Both will shave.

Jordan: I am fine with losing muscle. I gain it quite easily, and right now, I got bulky muscles and wanted leaner ones anyway. Agility is my current goal, and I hope to gain muscles specifically for martial arts and such.
pgandy: I will probably end up making a wooden training sword in the end. My Danu is my baby, so until I can get a second or third, I wanna keep it in good shape. What you are talking about makes me almost happy I don't got a steel scabbard haha

Wood waster: Adding weight is easy. Find nuts/bolts/lead weights, and drill a hole, drop them in, tape over it...test for balance etc, then glue them in it they are ok. This may weaken the waster a little, but the point is to not do full power blows, its for pell work. Heck, I made one once from an old 2x4, sanded a nice handle into it, weighted and balanced it. Lasted for years. Though my pell is a peeler core with carpet wrapped around it. Ugly, but functional. Also, consider using rattan, its malleable, bendable with steam, and a good substitute for steel weapons. Heck, some of the plastic cold steel wasters might be an idea for you. Just tossing out ideas.

Yea, those cold steel wasters were something I wanted to invest in. They have a lot of stuff I really enjoy, and their flexibility would make them great for safety when practicing drills with a partner
Also, I find that holding the bottom of the handle on my bokken is a great way to build strength. My heavy as heck shield and this should be good for strength training, though it wont give me a realistic muscle memory of my actual swords. To combat this, I choke up on the grip to make it more size accurate for drills. Its a big trade off, but it will do till I invest in something better, and its safe to practice with

Yea, those cold steel wasters were something I wanted to invest in. They have a lot of stuff I really enjoy, and their flexibility would make them great for safety when practicing drills with a partner That polypropylene stuff is actually not very flexible at all. It hits very much like wooden wasters would, with no meaningful give in a thrust. Personally, I don't like their light weight and really far forward balance, either (they're balanced at just about the middle of their length, like any plain old stick), and the guards on the Euros are needlessly chunky. (The knife trainers are pretty cool! Although I'd prefer if they were twice as heavy to make them feel more like the actual knives they're supposed to model.) That said, they are quite tough (but, contrary to their marketing, NOT cut resistant!) and fairly cheap...

I have both CS euro wasters and they arent useful without modification. The points are actually dangerous and the edges arent well rounded. You would have to reprofile, possibly compromising the sturdiness, and then add weight to it.

Thats a bit disappointing to hear, but I don't mind modifying. They would do for drills and what not

I have one of their trainer swords, two of the trainer tomahawks, and a pile of trainer knives. The swords are a little clumsy (crossguard is big and thick, pommel seems a little oversized as well) but they're really sturdy, don't crack or get affected by moisture, and they're cheap. I don't have any other wasters to compare the CS trainer swords to, but for the price I was satisfied with what I got. The tomahawks and knives I really like.

I have the CS Medieval Trainer (the 1 hander) and find what MOK says about the polypropylene pretty much head on. I got it for a video I made regarding taking on a sword with a dagger. The handling and balance are terrible, nothing at all like a sword should be. It remains hanging behind my door and I should pitch it. In Legacy’s words clumsy and thick.

Gotta say... Now that I got a buckler, the tides have changed. Congratulations on the buckler. I love mine, more so in the beginning. That’s what prompted me to make my round shield. It handles like my buckler in every way except the carry and gives more protection. Glad that you got a buckler. I am sure that you will have no regrets.

Been just carrying it around and trying out some boxing moves with it. I bet this thing would be an amazing damage enhancer in fighting. The thing is amazing as a wewpon on its own

Heck yes. The force one can generate would be plenty to push an incoming weapon aside. This was one of my initial worries.
When practicing shield and Buckler, which arm is a more common target for cuts? The Buckler arm or the sword arm?

It sounds like you are getting to know and enjoy your buckler. As you are finding out it’s a weapon in itself and is capable of sending your opponent to the dentist amongst other things. I think of my buckler/shield as my primary weapon and to open up a strike for the sword. I like to give point but really dislike exposing my forearm when doing so and a buckler/shield eases my concerns. I don’t understand why a buckler or shield is so much overlooked. People seem to go for the swords and forget all else. But the reason for this post is to alert you to something I found the hard way, but fortunately in this case the wound was superficial from a glancing blow and healed in about a week. I was practicing the 1.33 drill and was using ward #1 wearing a T shirt and using a live blade. I didn’t synchronize the arms correctly and clipped my elbow with the blade. I now wear my light gambeson when doing such things. Just a heads up.

I love my cold steel buckler...it was cheap, if I break it, its cheap to replace, and I customized the grip on my belt sander to better fit my hand. A little grip tape and its good to go. And I use mine for full contact SCA combat, so I'm basically blocking hard waster swings of 3lb swords and up. I'm actually shocked it hasnt exploded...

My Buckler looks too pretty to damage up
