Introduction
Merry Christmas everyone. I wanted to do a quick review on my Ronin Crusader Medieval sword that I purchased a few weeks ago.
I had been wanting to purchase a inexpensive and decent Medieval Sword for some time and finally decided to get this one. I decided on this one because of the feedback I received from members of this forum. Watching the cutting review on the SBG store also helped me decide.
Historical Overview
The design of this sword is replica of the Oakeshott Type XIIa War Sword used by the Knights Templar.
Full Disclosure
I am in no way affiliated with Ronin Katana and since this is the first item I have purchased from them I have no reason to be biased toward this company and its products.
Initial Impressions
Shipping was really fast and I received the sword quicker than I had expected. The sword was decently packaged although I think they should have used more packing to protect the sword. The inner box had holes where the hand guard had rattled around during shipment however the sword was undamaged in any way. The scabbard and belt were quite nice. I drew the sword from the scabbard and noted there was some waxy residue on the blade which I was able to remove very easily. The blade was straight and true. The fuller was well done. When I looked down the blade I could see some waviness along the fuller but nothing that affected the straightness of the blade
I also loved the Appleseed edge as it is really well done. Blade was not paper cutting sharp but would cut cardboard out of the box.
Statistics
I measured the sword as best I could and the measurements were pretty much point on as per the product description. Its kinda hard to measure a longsword with a tape measure.
Blade length: 35.5 inches
Handle length: 7 inches
Width: 2 inches
Thickness .028 inches
Weight approx. 3 pounds
Handling
I was surprised how well the sword handled over all. The grip felt comfortable enough for me and sword seemed to be well balanced. I could wield and swing the sword very easily. Cutting was no problem. I took it outside and tested it on some water jugs. I was really surprised how well it cut. It cut through stuff almost effortlessly. I miss judged my first cut and actually cut the blue cap on the water jug into. Checked the edge after cutting was done and no scratches dings, chips or rolled edge. Blade looked as if I had never cut with it.
Pros
nice leather grip
nice belt and scabbard
weight is correct for this type
beautiful blade with fuller
Appleseed edge
Cons
Packaging could use some improvement
Fuller somewhat wavy but not excessively so.
Conclusions
I would definitely would recommend this sword to someone who is purchasing their first medieval type sword. Good overall quality, sturdy and will cut really good. I have a cutting video that I will add later today
