A friend of mine just bought a Kahr CM9 online, $180, used. The FFL charged $30, the shipping was $20, the taxes were $20. Out the door with a very nice 9mm for $250, including a spare magazine. The Phoenix arms HP22, the 5" long barrel, can be had for $120 in used condition or brand new for $160. and is accurate, reliable, durable. You dont have to spend $600 in order to own a quality handgun. You just have to know what to look for and where to look.

There are many ways to get some decent pistols and rifles on the low end. Just have to research and not be in a hurry.
Some really good deals on European military surplus and also many used US firearms that have been shot very little or not at all.
Some companies make lower end firearms that are good quality for the price.

OK, I'll chime in here. My all time favorite is the PM, "Pistolet Makarova", or simply the Makarov. Why? In firing scores of example of the Soviet or East German, Chinese and Bulgarian licensed copies somewhere over 10,000 rds. I've found them to be ultra reliable, easy to clean, easy to do (seldom,) needed parts replacements and accurate. There is a large choice of ammunition choices in the original 9x18. (.380/9x17 versions are also common though a tad less powerful.) I am admittedly a fan boy, but it is based on actual experience and a great deal of research. Oh, and I'll mention it was the 1st handgun in outer space and indeed there is still at least 1 in the Mir Space Station as part of the survival kit. Cheers, ABTOMAT

I agree. My collection is heavy on Eastern European firearms. Everything from WWI and up seems to be built like tanks. Really like the Russian stuff and the copies from their old satellite countries. One of my favorite rifles is a Russian SKS. Have the Yugo and Chinese copy as well but the Russian one is top notch.

I dearly want an AK-74 but in 5.56x45 instead. Best of both worlds that way - the superior rifle and the superior poodle shooter cartridge.

I got a handgun and I didn't spend a single penny on it. How did I get it for free? I used my Cabela's club points. Ordinarily it would've costed me over a grand but since I had over a grand in club points I used those to buy it. A Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 Casull.

My most powerful handgun is a 44 mag. Let us know how that big boy kicks!

My most powerful handgun is a 44 mag. Let us know how that big boy kicks! It doesn't have too strong a recoil, at least the recoil was less than I expected even though I was using bear rounds. With a large heavy frame and a 7 1/2 inch barrel much of the recoil will be absorbed.
