which could be threaded onto a thin steel tube, which would fit inside of another tube/sheath, which I could screw onto the first tube so as to make a spear. This would be many times better than just a spare, just a sword, just a knife.

Interesting idea! I'm puzzeling with a knife & short staff = sword/long staff = spear combo with my Cold Steel Bushman but hadn't the idea of an intermediate piece. There's also a Bowie Bushman.

I tried to attach the bushman on my fighting umbrella too, but it didn't work without irreversible changes. When SHTF you want an umbrella! Another idea: A bo staff with a bushman on each end.

I have come to be quite strongly of the opinion that, if you have the option, a proper spear and a proper knife beat a combination spear-knife in every regard except maybe in total carry weight.

That's true, but what if you don't have this option? F.e. in Germany you can legally carry a fixed knife with a blade not longer than 12 cm and a staff, but not a spear because that's a weapon. The SHTF idea also can be seen as the question what the minimal number of tools would be you need to survive (beside an umbrella).

If you don't have a choice, there's nothing to think about: you just use what you have. Although in a real SHTF scenario I probably wouldn't be too worried about legalities, as such... Minimal number of tools? Well, of course it will depend on the environment and your training, but here's my absolute bare necessities list: 1) Knife

Agree! (perhaps a sharp axehead?)

I would choose a long rifle and bayonet (in my case a nagant m91 with its spike bayonet) and a dedicated knife for chorework. Maybe a machete I could strap to my backpack as well. Later on if I really was pressed to, find a straight stick and lash the bayonet to it. This way I have rifle for hunting, it can be a heavy durable spear if needed, and when I run out of ammo I could just ditch the gun.
I understand wanting to pack light but do think myself capable of packing heavy in a do or die situation.

I'd prefer a bayonet mounted on a nuclear powered aircraft carrier, ... hard to beat!

HAHAHAHAHA...you've obviously seen the newer flying guillotine movies on Netflix...that was the response to the 'ultimate weapon' a weaponized umbrella
