you can walk down the street with it on your pack, in its sheath and nobody will give you any grief about it. Try THAT with a hatchet or machete and see how far you get. Ditto with keeping it between the seats of your vehicle, the blade hidden under the milkcrate full of whatever, or under the toolbox, etc. That thing can cleave off an arm or leg, can be thrown very well, it would disable you even if it "only" hit you with the handle-end. $30 on Amazon.

Everyone should have one of those. Off the charts utility for the vehicle.

+1 a military style shovel is a great tool. I like the well made fold-able ones.
I usually tote one in the car during winter and take it camping. You'd be hard pressed to find a more useful tool.

especially if you keep the 2 spare handles for it, the long one and the right-angle forked one, for converting it to an adze-hoe-pick.

So, how well does it work as a shovel?

So, how well does it work as a shovel? Very well for a two handed mini shovel, but (as expected) no comparison to a standard full size. You have to crouch or use while on your knees, have a smaller head to work with (that's what she said ) and (with 13" handle) you don't have leverage options like a full size. I would loath to use a mini shovel on any large project vs a standard size, but to dig your vehicle out of a rut or move a few bags worth of sand/dirt around, it'll do the job. Not to mention significant chopping ability for good sized branches that you find blocking a road, though it ain't (just like a standard shovel) a substitute for a full sized axe.

Noticed Amazon also has some original (C. 1984) Soviet shovels.

These are great. It's my #1 tool for camping and stuff. It can be used as a chopping tool, but it takes some practice and care because the edge alignment is tricky.
Compared to all-metal folding e-tools, it is lighter and a far better chopper. The folding shovel's principal advantage is that the head can be tightened at 90 degrees and be used as an added or hoe to break up the ground.
If I had to do any significant digging with the special forces shovel, I would use it to chop down a 4-5' sapling or branch of about 1.5" wide and switch out the handle to make it a full size spade. I tried this once and it worked well.
Throwing it is great camp out entertainment.

Yeah, the entrenching tool is a modern military classic for good reason.
