Just finished cleaning up a recently inherited rifle. It was my Grandfathers in WW2 and sat in his footlocker at my fathers house forever. My old man finally decided to commit fully to Florida and finally handed it off to me! He had no interest in weapons of any kind so it's been un-oiled for a LONG time. I took out my kit and cleaned it up and oiled it. Bore looks nice and shiny and have most of the kit with it! A sling, the tube cleaning kit, 5 mags (3 full of original era ammo), and a mag pouch. Pretty cool to have a relatively rare rifle in the collection with all matching parts. Made doubly cool that it was carried by my bad-ass Grandfather when he was a paratrooper.

Yeah, that's multiple levels of awesome. I'd love to own any variant of the M1, but they've gotten so expensive since the last time I tried to find one. Inheriting one seems to be the way to go.

In my youth, I used to see M1 carbines for 75$. A couple years back, a woman at a gun show walked past me with an M1 with a $700 price tag. I nearly died. Now they can go for more than $3,500. It's amazing how much a rifle can increase in value if it's considered collectable.

The "carried-by-gramps" stuff goes into the never sell cabinet. Cleaned up, maybe shot with once or twice, but then kept for the history!
