Are they close enough to be compatible? Anybody try it before?

Are they close enough to be compatible? Anybody try it before? Nope. If you try it buggers up both threads.

No, imperial and metric threads are incompatible, at least in my experience.

No, imperial and metric threads are incompatible, at least in my experience. Well, I have forced it on occasion. ("I it don't fit, force it; if it breaks it needed replacement anyway." ;) ) In fact on a couple swords it was a quirky advantage--that pommel's never coming off! (rofl) Of course, those were cheap blades, and on a couple others me cranking on them to force them snapped the threaded part of the tang instead. ::) So yeah, unless you're tinkering with one you're lukewarm about--and prepared to turn the project into a shortened one instead if it messes up, probably best to steer clear of trying!

Give us a bit more detail. Using a tapping tool you could turn a inner M6 thread into a 1/4 inch thread... although the engineers reading this are probably feeling disgusted about the idea...
