Salamander forge will always be a classic, even if his pieces haven't really changed much in shape over the years I still appreciate them

My personal tastes have long since moved past his aesthetic, but if I found one at a decent price second hand I might just buy it for the sake of nostalgia.

However, it all has that real 80's renaissance faire aesthetic going on. Jim was one of the top dogs, before the explosion of the internet that made the exchange of information so easy. The only criticism I can make is that his work seems stuck in 1985.

It is remarkable that roughly 80% of the voters have checked Windlass and/or CAS/Hanwei and that the other production and semi-production category has not surpassed those two. Cold Steel and Depeeka just two one might expect to swell the other production category, as well as all the ATrim out there. Lutel, Armour Class a couple of more. I know this is more than a USA forum. Still a decent roll cal number as well for 24hrs or so. I see you lurkers out there we sure don't see 48 readers responding openly in most threads. What I see is a fairly good perspective of the number of readers voting. Perhaps one of the most interesting numbers is the voters showing so many having bought custom swords. Almost half the voters.

What's about resells? I see many high end and custom swords reselled, do they count every time? Might vitiate the poll.

They would still best be voted by one of the seven, or other, custom or other less specific if the source was other. The only real issue I see is keeping the poll/thread alive. There have been two new voters since earlier this morning. As mentioned, it is as much a glorified silent roll call. We certainly don't have 57 regular posters in any subsection here. Let along in any thread that is replied to, aside some of the old threads such as New Acquisitions.

I'm assuming you mean windlass I'm a former newspaper editor, my degree is in English writing, I have six Windlass swords, and I still missed the error until you wrote this. It's amazing how senility creeps up on you.

So true Patrick. Time marches on. My mind was joggled to yesteryear the other day in seeing a Kirby Wise dagger on ebay. Then your reply had me thinking of Eirk Stevenson, who seems to have been lost in the shuffle but appears quite well on fb. The list would grow and grow. Massey is around the net on various boards. I'm even now forgetting a smith that did a blade I have, ah yes, Chris Makin. He has been around Don Fogg's board with others. I've even seen Eyal Azerad over there. Scott Rousch had me worried but he is just taking a break for now. I've gotten bit by the old timers years myself and now a fourth generation old fart at the family events. Time is a cruel mistress, as they say. I'm less than two months from retiring from law enforcement and I'm in the third generation category at family functions. Most of the people I work with are as young, or younger than my own children. I remember when Jim Hrisoulas was "the man" and Del Tins were considered top shelf production. I haven't thought of Kirby in years. I used to run into him all the time during the 80s while living in SoCal. Today, we're really suffering from an embarrassment of riches in this hobby. Now, the only limit is ones bank account. Thanks for serving and protecting! Not sure if you've been California law enforcement for your entire career or not, but hopefully if you were it was somewhere quieter in the north. Cant imagine law enforcement during all of the various riots CA has seen.

When I discharged I briefly talked to several California agencies, but the wife and I decided we didn't want to raise our children in the land of fruits and nuts.

I'm also in the plains and recently looked into our state troopers. My wife's uncle was one for decades and said it's the best but with our first baby here recommended against 6 months of in house training missing such a fast paced part our little ones life. I think the plains will be the last to buy into the hype and disown the people who try to keep us safe in our day to day. Thanks again.

I'm wrapping up 25 years as a State Trooper, so I may be a bit biased but it has a lot to recommend it over other LE positions. Our youngest was two months old when I started training so I empathize.

Three of my longswords are from local swordsmith Luděk Hugo Vobořil, another one (old and overweighted stage combat "trail") is from another local swordsmith Luděk Kalný... sword looks good, but its handling is not exactly awesome, it has distal taper and proper shape, but it is too robust. I held worse ones, but this one is not good, too heavy. But smith could make better, we are using his federschwerts with hollow pommels in our club and they are excellent. I also own falchion and messer from Fabri Armorum (Kronďák), these are cheap, durable stage combat tools, not so heavy, not so bad (especially for the price) but still not exactly good. I held some of his recent work - bit shorter longsword, nice for the eye, really good in the hands, with no doubt excellent work for its price (it is not forged, there are more detailed and fancy swords, but it has proper weight and balance so for practical use without any significant cons) - he definitely get better over time, he is able to make good sword, you just have to ask for it specifically, because predominantly he is massproducing those "stage combat" weapons and you have no chance to find it on KOA (what I find there from Fabri Armorum was terrible, ugly, heavy old products, it is not comparable even with his current lowcost stage combat productions). I am looking for another sword, maybe some cheap longsword to have something of proper weight for practicing without fear of abuse... there is one (quite new) producer, who makes really cheap, simple looking swords with basically totally amazing handling for its price (there is probably no competition for that, or at least I don't find any). I don't own one yet, but I held few their products and help my friend to get one recently (136cm overall for longsword, 1730g - quite long, but interresting weapon which feels good in the hand). This is one of my good ones, it was for my wife, but she is to lazy to use it(kids and stuff, you know..) so ... m.hugo1.webnode.cz/album/mece-vyrobene-dobovou-technologii/sam-0297-kopie-jpg/

Just a reminder that this can be updated for years to come. Although you can only vote once for each category, it will continue to somewhat show where the market has spent the money.
One can draw their own conclusions from this poll and it can be an entirely anonymous bit of feedback for the medieval sword market. Again, as this is meant for and posted in the medieval section, I would hope votes for any category of the poll reflect buys in the medieval genre.

Windlass Museum Replicas, CAS Hanwei, Cold Steel, Chenese. Really just functional beater stuff, but would like and do appreciate "the good stuff" customs. A wall of antiques of various type would be pretty cool as well.

Keep in mind that the poll is open for another twenty years, so all medievalists can update their own buying experiences. With the holidays upon us, there will be swords inbound and most likely new posters.
Again, as this is the medieval (and viking) section here, the poll is directed towards those types of swords. Check as many that might apply.
Windlass and the CAS/Hanwei families continue leading the demographic. It seems roughly 2/3 of those choosing a sword have bought from either one, or both of these two producers.

I know it has only been a couple of weeks but with Santa now on vacation, any holiday additions to the poll are welcome. We have seen a number of new posters to voting in the poll.
Again, this isn't about how many swords one might have but from what producers the swords came from.
The poll doesn't lock until 2038, so there is plenty of time for the statistics to grow. I won't be bumping this up again until it falls off the first page of threads and even then, not likely more than quarterly.
