Yeah, plus Conan actually wore horned helmets in a few of the original stories, so hey! Nice reference, there.
I think the reverse grip spinning and back carrying of swords and being taught fighting in the mysterious East was just a thing to do with the general '80s ninja craze...

Zatoichi was doing it in the '60's, before the Shaw brothers outstanding masterpieces.
