I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this one yet. It's a new Netflix movie that, based on the preview, has probably the most authentic 13th/14th century kit on screen to date in a major production. Riveted mail, gambesons, bucklers, and even authentic Scottish arming swords! Not to mention Stannis the Mannis as Longshanks!

And then BAM. Referendum for Scotland to leave the UK again.
Movie looks interesting for sure. Captain Kirk should easily make a good Robert.

Netflix shows are either really crap (like "Mohawk") or really good (like "Hatfields and McCoys"). I sure hope it's reslly good because I'd love for more good shows with swords.

It does look really good. I'm excited to see it. I'm not a stickler for things like this usually, but I hope Chris Pine can pull off a decent Scottish accent.

Just so that it is better than that godforsaken claptrap of "Braveheart", that's all I ask and it's a very low bar to pass.

Ha, ha! It may be inaccurate in a lot of things, but there's nothing like Braveheart. Its in my top movies of all time, after the Star Wars films (minus TLJ), the LOTR movies, and the Indiana Jones movies. There is just too much awesome in Braveheart for the inaccuracies to bring it down.

I have a soft spot for "Braveheart." It's really no worse than most Hollywood movies when it comes to accuracy. They got the spirit right even if they screwed up the details. Patrick McGoohan was awesome as Longshanks--one of the few actors to really demonstrate the fear that a medieval monarch could inspire.

Cynical person is cynical. I don't hold out much hope that Outlaw King will be better than the merely bad period films like Ridley Scott's Robin Hood and Kingdom of Heaven, but it might be better than the true abominations like Braveheart and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Finally I've found another who doesn't think KoH is actually a historically accurate epic of our times.. I dont need historicity for a film to be good though. Braveheart was great!

But I love TLJ so maybe we just have different tastes in film. For what it's worth. I like the director's cut of KoH, but historical? Not really. It goes for the modern tropes of over-villianizing the Templars, and over-romanticizing Saladin.

Theophilus and Zenhydra, I think I'm the biggest KoH detractor out there. I came out of the theater hating myself for having payed to see that atrocious movie. It is wildly inaccurate historically, but on top of that its hit-you-over-the head preachy in a bigoted way. All of Ridley Scott's medieval movies and tv productions are like this in some way, but KoH took the cake.
Cosmoline, yes McGoohan was simply superb as Edward I. What a wonderful villain!
There is one good thing that Braveheart, Outlaw King (seemingly), and even the terrible Scott medieval movies have in common, and that is excellent props and costumes. I'd love to come away from those productions with some of those!

Its terrible. No way I'd watch the director's cut. TLJ gets worse every time I see it. I love Star Wars, and TLJ just pretty much spit in the face of the franchise. I bought the Riff Trax send up of it. I imagine its the only way I'd ever watch the movie again. Just waiting for more family to come in to town, so we can all watch it, and join in the derision.

It's impossible to tell if the film will be good as a film based on the trailer. But the authenticity already puts it above Kingdom of Heaven. And makes it worth watching. Medieval Scottish politics make "Game of Thrones" seem tame and kid-friendly, so hopefully they didn't tone down the violence. I remember one Scottish nobleman who took the infant of a rival into the center of town and smashed its head against the town cross. IIRC Robert shived a guy to death during peace talks in a church!

Yeah, Robert the Bruce's actions in that church got him temporarily excommunicated from the Church. It was eventually lifted, though.

I'll at least give the Outlaw King a try, not like I'll lose more than a few hours at worst since I already have Netflix. Also, the accuracy looked great, but one nitpick I have is the coifs, which are usually depicted as thicker, more padded, and covering the mouth and chin in period art. The loose hood coif seems a modern thing.
