Hi all,
As many of you probably know, behind the scenes for over a year now I have been working on a new website dedicated to the SBG Fantasy Sword Project called 'Legendary Swords - the Eletrues Project' and it will actually be launching on the 20th of September..
One thing is missing though, and that is a webcomic series that will bring all the stories together into an ongoing tale of swords, sorcery and high adventure.
I have storyboarded out the first 3 - 4 editions, starting off in the BadLands with Aofie and the Sword of Danu to get the ball rolling as the Heros of the story are gathered together for an epic battle against the Deathless Witch in the Silent Alliance Raid.. But I am no graphic artist by any stretch of the imagination.. I can grab bits and pieces and am fairly handy with photoshop now, but cannot draw to save my life.
As such, I am looking for some digital artists to help get the ball rolling - the goal is to produce an economical webcomic that has a fairly simple style that many people could do so that if one artist decides to stop, someone else can pick up without a jarring change in the continuity.
Here is a sample of what I mean for 'scene 1'
A combination of color and black and white may or may not work, depends on costs - I was thinking even that the characters could all be black and white but the swords could be actual images of what has been made - combining fantasy with reality - but at the end of the day fir it to work, it needs to be affordable (we are well over budget on the project, probably close to $20,000 spent so far - I am scared to tally it up, could actually be more than that..)
Anyway, if some of you are interested, let me know in this thread with an example of your work and we can maybe work something out. Payment can be via cash (PayPal) or in swords if you like!
Thanks! Should be a lot of fun..

Oh man, make it something like the minicomics Zoids and Masters of the Universe figures used to come with and you'll sell SO MANY TOYS SWORDS...

This is the kind of thing that can be done with a combination of Daz Studio3D, and GIMP. Both programs are free, but the resources used to make the base images are not, so if your storyboards get very elaborate, it could get cost prohibitive.

Stormmaster - you may get a chance very soon actually, will be sending out some early bird private invites to the site ahead of the launch for people who have contributed previously to designs or things that have been included in the storylines. And of course, you are one of those.
MOK - yes indeed,I am totally nostalgic for those comics that came with Masters of the Universe Figures. So much more interesting than the TV cartoon series with Adam Kent and Super Heman.. Not sure if print copies will be included with the swords, but at least the option to buy the swords you see in the comics in real steel is there.. (that is a possible tag line for the entire site actually "Fantasy Sword Art Made REAL in STEEL").
Exeter - Wow, that looks cool! I imagine that would be pretty time consuming to make a full comic series with. Might be better suited to some of the other artworks separate from the comic. I will email you shortly on this to touch base about it - really like what was done for Aofie.
It is turning into a very interesting project...!

Actually, doing it this way it drastically speeds up the image production times. When made this way, you have a lot more leeway in the background and post processing. Using the comic post-processing makes it quite a bit simpler because you don't have to preserve the same level of detail in the overall image. In a pinch, you could even make a hand drawn background work. The Daz3D software is capable of producing post realistic results, but time and difficulty goes up exponentially depending on the complexity of the scene. This shows what can be done, but producing every image to this level of detail would not be practical. At least in the time frame mentioned earlier.

You know, as much as I'm personally averse to stuff like Poser art (it always reminds me of the cheap porn parodies newsgroups used to be full of ), that might well be the easiest option for staying in budget as the assets aren't hugely expensive for the most part. PS. I mean, with good staging and framing you can get pretty impressive mileage out of a very small number of assets. It's a lot like low budget film making - creativity can stretch limited resources surprisingly far.

Yeah, the term 'Poser art' will hit hot buttons in some of the digital art forums, but there's no denying the impact that program had in the industry... and home produced porn was a big part of it. But that is why I suggested the cartoon style rendering. It's fast, and since I produce and sell digital assets in that market, I already have a pretty big library and can make custom models fairly quickly if needed (thinking of the sword models themselves.) Assuming, of course, it's not something complex. I haven't seen Paul's storyboards, so I don't know what he has in mind. I knocked out the sample cartoon quickly based on his image, but if the next board shows 50 elves involved in a city battle with legionnaires, trolls and a couple of dragons, that would be a bit more difficult... even for "Poser art."

Yeah, in terms of that art style I like the cartoony version way more. The realistic one just kinda looks gross.

I've heard CGI animators refer to it as the uncanny valley. If you're making a comic, you really want to avoid it. I only put it up to show what the base image was like before I postworked it to make the cartoon. There are other ways of cartoonizing an image to make it more universally appealing, but I used this one because it reduces the postwork to under two minutes.

Agreed that the second one has the 'uncanny valley' thing going on, but the first example is great - and if it is fast, worth having a look at. I have sent Exeter and email to see what might be involved, hopefully between this and a few other inquires we should be able to find some way to get something happening with this.

As with all things, price rises as quality does as well.
Webcomics are usually priced on a per-page basis. Colored pages will be more expensive due to time.
I am wondering, though, will the webcomic be released per issue or per page?

We will do the best we can with limited resources. The current plan is to release a 'chapter' of around 20 panels each time, ending either at a cliffhanger of a sort, or with a meaningful revelation so that (I hope) people will want to know what happens next..
At launch, the plan is to have 1 chapter in there. Fingers crossed I can make the deadline.. (only 22-23 days and counting!!).
We have a bit of a plan now and for now the positions have been filled, so will remove this as an announcement.

I would be happy to do whatever I can to help. I am not much of a digital artist, but I have a friend who is. I am extremely flattered that Aofie was kept as a character
Also, I really dig what you got going there Exeter. Your style of art really works well for the over all atmosphere for this forum and you kept a lot of key elements that are essential to her design.
