Hi I am new to the forum. I recently acquired this sword and was wondering if it might be possible to help me identify its type/age/value/etc. The scabbard is wooden with a black pitch type covering. There is only one mark visible on the blade looks a bit like a sun. In the scabbard its 33 inches long. The blade is 21 inches long and the handle is about 10.5 inches. I think there is a metal pommel missing from the end of the handle. The Rope tassle is part complete. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks Philip

SE Asian dha (or daab, in Thailand). A common traditional sword of continental SE Asia. Lots of info at www.arscives.com/historysteel/continentalsea.article.htmLooks Burmese to me, and if I had to guess further, Shan. 2nd half of 20th century? I don't know the sun mark. (I'm only familiar with the common Thai marks (S-marks and circle/turtle marks).) Value is a bit difficult to be accurate with, with the missing pommel. This looks better than the usual Thai tourist-market swords (which often sell for about US$50). Simple non-tourist dha often sell for about $200, but perhaps this would be less due to the pommel. (Fancy dha - which can be really fine blades, as well as fancy silver mounts - will often sell for $1000 and up.)

wheres a good place to find ceremonial silver dha? They must be super rare I've seen quite a few at Oriental-Arms. Always with a four to five digit price tag, though. If I was a rich man...

As well as Oriental Arms, also check Ashoka Arts (who has a couple of fancy, but not full-on silver-bling fancy, dha at the moment), and www.swordsantiqueweapons.com (the seller collects those high-end dha, so they pass through his hands).
