Now that I have successfully done a few leather grip wraps with bog standard risers of a few different sizes, I am interested in trying something a bit more ambitious. Previously, I have glued down a cord wrapping onto the wood grip, then glued on the leather/cord riser material, then applied wet veg-tan with a glue backing on top of the previous layers, and finally tightly wrap the whole shebang in cordage until it dries (these all happen in stages). What is the best way to achieve complex and multi-directional risers under a leather wrap? How do you manage to tightly glue the leather around the various contours without being able to bind it all down with taut cordage? I humbly seek the wisdom of the honored and sagacious elders. Some examples of what I want to be able to accomplish:

Work slowly and in sections, don't try and glue the whole thing at once. Use your fingers or some kind of smooth rounded tool to press the leather against and on the risers, basically massage that leather into and on the risers while the glue starts to set. That's what I have done in the past. I leave the back of the scabbard till last and cut the final leather for the back seam after the front with the riser patterns etc is all done. You would be surprised at how well thin leather takes the shape of the risers...but yeah you have to work slow if you want them to really pop out.

That must be why I see bone folders in the background of some of these work-in-progress photos.
