Hey all. I'm sure a lot of you already know, but for those of you who don't, Skallagrim, the biggest YouTube personality in our community, is liquidating half of his collection to stay afloat in the post apocalypse YouTube nightmare.
To be more specific, the adpocalypse was an overhaul of the YouTube monetization process earlier this year that made it harder for videos deemd controversial to be found by new people or seen by subscribers. They also risk not being monetized for ad revenue at all. Since Skallagrims videos feature weapons and violence simulation, they are often lumped into this category, making less money than they used to, or no money what so ever.
I'm not gonna lie, Skallagrim is the biggest reason I got into sword collecting. I found his channel two years back and ate up everything I could. It's been everything from entertaining when I was bored, to informative when I was curious, and cathartic when I was going through some rough patches. Because he means a lot to myself and I'm sure many others, I'm asking everyone to support him through this rough time in anyway they can. I know not everyone can afford to support him with their wallet, so I'm going to include a list below of free and payed ways you can help out. Thanks guys, let's end this YouTube BS rightly.
1. Subscribe to his YouTube Channel 2. Watch his videos (views give revenue not base sunscribers) 3. Support him on Patreon (options range between 1 and 100 USD per month, an entitle you to special bonus content accordingly) 4. Buy his merchandise (Skallagrim has partners with merch stores to sell tshirts, mugs, stickers, etc. A large chunk of your purchase goes to him) 5. PayPal him a one time donation (Link to do so is in his video description) 6. Follow him on social media for video and channel updates 7. Get creative (tell your friends to watch his stuff, offer to send him those tatami mats gathering dust in your garage, anything that you can afford to do with your time or wallet goes a long way)

They are really getting ridiculous. Do they just look at a thumbnail and see a sword and assume he's telling people how to commit acts of violence with one? Hopefully, like most of these frenzies, things will calm down eventually.

Although sadly I can't see it getting better, did you see what happened with Medieval Review? He made an April fool's joke about getting a Game of thrones longclaw custom made. And YouTube flagged it for false advertising, now he can't livestream till June. YouTube need to sort their stuff out.

YouTube need to sort their stuff out. Why? They aren't going to lose money from people like us and as a part of a publicly traded company (Google) making money for their shareholders is their ONLY concern. We don't like the terms? Leave. We don't own them and they aren't part of the government so therefore we have no right to any say over the terms they offer us. We can accept them. Or not. Those are our choices. If we want to use their service, we accept them. If we want to go somewhere else, we then have to accept their terms of service. Unless someone wins several hundred millions in the lottery and can start there own service - which will then have whatever terms of service that person wants... and so we go round to the beginning again.

You're right. Youtube has no economic incentive to change what they're doing. But what they're doing is still causing extreme harm to certain members of their community. The truth is, no video hosting site can compete with youtube, so we have to speak up and help out for those being harmed by the current monopolies practices in whatever way we can.

I don't understand how getting people to send you stuff to play with and filming it is a viable career path, but it wouldn't be the first time a well dried up.
Good luck, keep the best stuff sell what you can and laugh at the pile of money you still have.

I think the main issue (and what I believe we are all in agreement about) is political correctness run amok, in this case negatively affecting blades, which are tools, historical objects, potential personal defense items, and a wonderful hobby. Remember, the bad guys, which the "nanny state" seems to forget, will ALWAYS be able (even in jail) to sharpen something and use it for nefarious purposes. You are, of course, correct that a company has a right to follow their business model as they seem fit, however, I feel this is of secondary importance, as we have the right to say (particularly on a blade forum) that it is silly, and frankly sucks.

Grab a piece of metal, sharpen it, then bind it to the end of a stick. You now have something that can beat a sword...the spear, king of weapons. Good luck to Skall.

I remember when Shall was an active member here. Pity he drifted off, especially to YouTube, which is such an unstable, unpredictable environment anyway. Their algorithms change with the moon these days, and it's entirely up to their marketing team who gets promoted and what media we see.
Lots of folks I've been watching for years, and some I've only recently discovered, have risen and fallen on YouTube because it wants to ride some other new trend, instead. There are other venues, they're just not as easy.

But YouTube would rather promote these very questionable people instead of educators.

Skall was the reason I got into swords and I’ve long been supporting him, though I barely watch his videos anymore. I’ll do that again and maybe help out in patreon.
The firearms community has been much harder hit. Several channels have gotten hit out of nowhere and most are now migrating platforms to full30 or something similar. Pretty crazy how censorship really just leans towards a particular bias.

Yeah, I dont think anything will replace youtube in the near future, but I could see another site meant for content youtube doesnt monetize being set up. Stuff for news, weapons, politics, etc....on one hand I'd like to see a site where free speech is more permitted, on the other hand that opens a new can of worms, because if the site has no rules at all its just gonna become illegal and XXX stuff.

Hopefully, like most of these frenzies, things will calm down eventually. Are you actually living in CA? It seems like almost no frenzies have calmed down there. More and more laws get piled on top of each other trying to limit firearms and pointy objects. I for one am highly doubtful Youtube will back down from this until their bigger channels start getting shut down from their own policies. Even then, like others said, they are in the political game. Best we can do is stop using their service. It's difficult to though, until people like Skall find another avenue for their content. Firearms have started to move to other platforms with advertising, such as full30.com. Hopefully other undesirables move to other platforms as well :\. Or maybe Skall can get a place on full30.com. Might be too much macho Americana for someone who isn't immunized to it though lol. Unfortunately, with tight funds, I can't think of a way to support him outside of either "watching" ads on a video, or buying his stuff. There has to be an exchange of some sort for me to give him my money :\ Wish I had more money so I could just give it away. Can I just rewatch all of his videos? Does that give him more monies?

Skallagrim was the reason I got into Euro swords and discovered HEMA in the first place. It sucks that YT is becoming such a creator unfriendly environment for so many. I'm probably going to go fund him on Paypal now

More and more laws get piled on top of each other trying to limit firearms and pointy objects. Guns for sure are being more and more regulated here, to the point of ridiculousness. Not so much with the knives, at least not that I've seen. I live in a small, somewhat rural area in Northern California. The largest city in my county has less than thirty thousand people. We don't get a lot of the frenzy that you see in the larger population areas in the south, though my area is not immune to it. Luckily, nobody really seems to care about swords, so no trouble on that front. As for the Youtube matter, I wish they'd actually take the time to at least check if the channel is more of an educational or hobby oriented one, rather than just kind of assume that since it has weapons or weapon-like objects that it's about or promotes violence. I don't feel like Skallagrim's content is the kind they need to be worrying about.

While I said it jokingly, folk doing the video lifestyle could (and do?) have a more lucrative go at it. Skallagrim, Matt Easton and even such as Todeschini could be reaping more than Cafe Press pennies by developing bobble heads. Someone is going to pick up the ball and run with this one (while cutting in some of the other playas). Sure that first bobble might be a bit more than dinner prices but multiples then being pretty cheap to produce. Collect the entire series! Don't tell John Clements just yet but we'll cut him in If that reads as sarcastic, I apologize up front but these dashboard creations would reap a whole lot more coin than a coffee mug.

Don't get me wrong, I support Skal and enjoy his work as well as that of Matt Easton and many others on down the food chain to a kid named Stacho The Knight. That said, blaming Youtube for this is foolish - they are following what they perceive is the best way to make the maximum money for their shareholders.
Guns and swords are niches any more. Not enough eyes compared to video game walk-throughs, cute kittens & music videos. No Skal is not the kind of person they should be worrying about but they aren't going to pay enough live people to sort through the posts of beheadings from ISIL supporters vs someone like Skal whacking that gelatin head with a longsword. To do that would cost too much and cut into profits and hence into the shareholders. So they automate the process and when someone like Skal gets dinged it's up to him to complain to the few human reviewers. And that's how it's going to remain because - once again - this is all about shareholders and profit. That's "Capitalism" for you!
It's really that simple. Full30 is catering to the gunners and will probably become the primary outlet for them. If or where to swords will move remains to be seen.

We have a moral objection to their business practices, and they are in full control of their actions. Just because they are going to do whatever makes them the most money doesn't free them of moral obligations. Now, you can argue about moral obligations. Perhaps you think whatever is making a person the most money is a morally valid course of action. "Capitalism" works by us not using their service, and letting other people know why we aren't. Then, if enough people care, YouTube will take a financial hit and either fail, or change their business practices. Voting with your dollar, if you will.
