Specs from the main BCI website.
Blade Length: 21.1" (54cm)
Handle Length: 7.75" (20cm)
Point of Balance: 4.75" (12cm) from guard Weight: 1.88lbs (855g)
Materials and Construction
5160 Spring Steel Sharpened Blade. Kamagong Wood Handle and Mahogany Scabbard with brass reinforcements. Threaded handle construction. Premium Quality Construction.
Here is my Gladius and Spatha Collection in their sheaths.
A little comparison so you know the size of the Gladius next to Gladii of other makers.
Top to Bottom: BCI Fantasy Style Spatha (Fantasy because it has what the makers described as an Armour Piercing Tip)
BCI (Pompeii) Gladius, BCI (Mainz) Gladius (Two were made. The Mainz was created first, then the Pompeii followed), TFW (Pompeii) Gladius, and finally, the Busse Gladius.
I included the TFW Gladius as BCI also supplies TFW with their blades. The Busse Gladius is the smallest and most expensive of all of them. As you can see, the BCI Gladius sheaths feature beautiful Brass fittings, same as their TFW cousin.
The tip of the BCI (Pompeii) Gladius. Extremely pointy and reinforced, and will stab through things with little effort.
The Gladius has a kamagong handle. Previously in the Mainz Gladius, they didn't use kamagong.
Top to Bottom: BCI Pompeii Gladius Sheath and on the bottom is the BCI Mainz Gladius sheath. The opening in the newer gladius is rectangular, which makes sure that there are no alignment problems in the sheath. The Mainz Gladius sheath had a problem since it tries to follow the blade bevels. When you insert the sword, and it would not fully sheath correctly. As said, the Mainz Gladius was the first production run, so the Pompeii Gladius has fixed this problem.
What I would change with the BCI Pompeii Gladius is the grinding to accommodate the BCI logo. If this is too difficult for the smiths to follow then I recommend this one on the bottom.
Leave your comments below and let me know if you plan on buying one from BCI. If you are a Filipino living in the Philippines, they also price their blades differently to us.
